  1. He certainly took it too far, but there isn't nothing to it. Personality traits of a person, as well as intelligence, are genetically inheritable to a degree. The degree to which a give trait is heritable varies, but overall, a person's personality is about half inherited, and half learned. Ironically, Lovecraft himself is an example of him inheriting his mother's mental conditions. Still, culture is at least as important as genetics. Someone born with parents from a different continent getting proper nutrition, education and growing up in a host culture will be far better integrated with this culture than someone born with common genetics to the local people but a different cultural upbringing. Successful immigration programs prioritize cultural assimilation, and those immigrants usually become a welcome, contributing part of the local community within a generation or two.

  2.  @HenryGray-sy4pu  Yeah, he clearly took things too far. By my estimation, the old society was a bit too slow to accept change, too hostile to foreign ideas and people, while our own society is clearly far too welcoming of them, resulting in a clash between incompatible cultures. I'm sure there is a happy middle ground somewhere, but we haven't found it yet. It's hard to find balance when society is run by two competing factions who are more interested in pushing for change based on ideals rather than trying to build a system that actually works.

  7. I enjoy horror, but it can be necessary to separate the author from their work. A lot of horror authors/ artists are mentally disturbed (H.R. Geiger), older ones tend to have outdated cultural ideas (Lovecraft), and some of them are frankly insufferable (Stephen King).

  8. I want to see a crouching moron hidden badass who very rarely drops their humorous persona. For the first few episodes, they don't even get in a fight, but establish themselves as the funny comic relief. Even in combat they keep the jokes up, but not at the expense of competence. Instead, it's eerie how much they seem to enjoy themselves as they kill numerous mooks with ease, perhaps with just a little too much brutality to comfortably match their happy go lucky persona and charming smile.

  9. I like writing a villain with believable, maybe even selfless plans, but who doesn't even try to deny the fact that the enjoy every kill they make in service of that plan. They may see the enemy as a grave threat to their people's existence, and their stated motivation to wiping them out is to remove a threat to their own people, but they very clearly enjoy the destruction they cause, and love every second of direct combat they have with the heroes. Simply put, a blood knight with noble motivations but who enjoys the brutality of their work can be a hell of a lot of fun while not being entirely unsympathetic. Of course, they aren't really pure evil, but whatever.

Mental health is one of those things which is at least as dependent on genetics as it is on external factors. Some people remain optimistic in the worst of circumstances, while others are miserable while living lives of luxury.

  12. The battle off Samar. The Imperial Japanese Navy encountered a tiny group of much smaller Ameraican ships supporting the beach landings in Leyete. The American escort ships charged straight at the Japanese fleet like pissed off honeybadgers on LSD, fought ships 20 times their size so fiercely that the Japanese fleet turned tail and fled because they were convinced they were fighting half the American Navy.

  13. The Doomslayer. He doesn't grow or change as a character. But he does one thing, and he does it well. He's quite inspiring too, if you count the fear he inspires in the hordes of hell with his presence.

  14. Nuclear radiation does have elements of lovcraftian lore to it, a forbidden material that can kill simply by you witnessing it. This is certainly true of the elephant's foot at Chernobyl, and the color out of water has a startling number of parallels. As entertaining as this is, nuclear energy, if properly handled (as in, not by incompetent soviet burecrats), is actually one of the safest forms of energy we have. It statistically kills less people per unit of energy than most other sources of power.

  15. In defense of Heinlein, he writes speculative fiction. He doesn't actually believe all the stuff he writes. Certainly some of his actual opinions work their way in, but it's not always easy to tell for sure which are his actual beliefs, and which are simply hypotheticals made for the purpose of the plot. Also he's a bit crazy.
