It helps that I carry a military-looking backpack and I look like a scary hobo at the best of times lmao

Why tech bros and why those skills in particular? I’m all for self improvement but a lot of this seems like a wierd LARP made by bored people trying to concoct exciting solutions to problems with often boring answers. If you like doing it then go for it but don’t BS yourself. That being said if you wanna learn useful skills I recommend first aid. Very little sucks worse than standing around gawking like a useless idiot while an emergency is happening. Also assembling your own first aid kit has been pretty rewarding for me. Especially since the first aid kits they sell in the stores are overpriced ouchie boo-boo kits

@WokeEmperor You could say the same thing about being struck by lightning or being hit by a car, are you going to walk around in a rubber suit because once you’re hit, that’s probably it? I’m not against knowing how to protect yourself, but hyperfixating on that one specific, unlikely threat is irrational, especially when an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. You are right - this is the real world, and in the real world, you only have 24 hours in a day, so spending a large chunk of them preparing for one specific threat is unwise.

WokeEmperor That’s an awful lot of time spent preparing for something that is very unlikely to happen to you if you live in a tech hub.

@humorss It’s also useful outside of self defense, I screwed up my knees in a scooter accident last year and not knowing to dress it I basically had to limp onto a bus and be bedbound for the day until I could get in to see a doctor. (Wasn’t hurt enough to justify getting an ambulance) Even simple stuff like keeping some Hydralite satchets on you for a night out drinking or in case of a stomach flu can really help.

WokeEmperor It's actually closer to 44 hours a week if you factor out time spent sleeping and working (assuming an 8 hour work week). That's all the time you have for hobbies, chores, family (that's a big subtractor btw). Leaving you vanishingly little time to spend on one very specific life or death situation. Again, I assume you don't walk around in a rubber suit out of fear of being struck by lightning, so by your own logic you're wasting time on stuff that doesn't matter.

That’s probably one of the first lessons my jiujitsu teacher drilled into me - the best way to win fights is to avoid getting into them.

Can’t even have knives where I am. I still keep a leatherman wave nested in my bag where cops aren’t likely to look, so it’s there if I really need it but I also have have some legal excuses to be carrying it (the bit driver and scissors are really handy lol)

You can still practice self defense and situational awareness. Honestly that’s probably a lot more effective than a gun.
1
@VileStorms So you can’t even use your fists or feet to defend yourself?

@tissuepaper9962 Granted, however I think this is a situation where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure - avoid shady areas, don't flash your wealth everywhere you go, practice situational awareness. Sure keep a gun on you and learn to use it, but unless you live in a bad area (despite presumably being rich), it seems kind of wasteful to me to spend so much of your week preparing for a confrontation that will probably never happen if you're smart about it. Hell in this scenario this video's about, it happened at like 2am when he was drunk and alone.

@tissuepaper9962 I didn't mean to imply you just go to some lessons and never touch the gun again until your life's in danger - i meant - as you said, practice at least one day a month. My point was basically that if you're a wealthy professional with a family, your time tends to be a premium, so doing what Wokeemperor said and spending so much time a week doing gym + boxing + gun training would be impractical for someone like that.
