Honestly I think the better and more honest answer is "I don't know, but here are where some people think we go" then list off a few religious interpretations of the afterlife. It's a proper answer that gets them thinking for themselves.

You clearly weren’t committed to the position if you left because you were a little depressed. Christianity gives you a purpose, but because the church is run by men, you’re inherently giving yourself another man’s purpose and telling you it’s godly. I can’t think of anything more cucked than that.

@aidenaune7008 Well most christians believe in the doctrine of Hell, and that unbelievers go there. Bringing up judgement day to a nonbeliever is implicitly a threat in that regard.

@007kingifrit “Horrible things will never happen to you” isn’t hopeful, it’s delusional and blatantly unhealthy. What if something bad does happen? What if they carry that attitude into adulthood? You just gave them a maladaptive coping mechanism. And I’m pretty sure the threat of eternal torture for you or your loved ones is “big suffering”, i know people who are traumatized by that crap.

That’s nice and all, but the more I think about it, even the concept of a soul makes zero sense. I mean, we know the brain is responsible for your emotions, memory and personality, change or damage the brain and those change too, so what is there left for a soul to do? It has zero explanatory power, and if there is one, there’s zero evidence it’ll keep anything that makes you you after you die

@frankhansman2111 The reason religion gets so much pushback is because of the constant attempts to force it down everyone else's throat. Oh, and none of those people killed in the name of atheism, whatever that means. They killed in the pursuit of personal power, or ideological supremacy. Atheism is just a lack of belief in god, blaming it for the dictatorships of the 20th century is absurd.

@sv3931 It was foolish of me to say that the Bible's function was a sales pitch in retrospect, it's meant more for believers than those who don't. That being said, Romans seems likely written to summarise and compel faith in nonbelievers. This is another problem of both the OT and NT I feel, it's open to interpretation. See, my interpretation and seemingly the interpretation of Christians who believe the OT laws are still in effect is that "fulfillment" and "all coming to pass" is referring to his second coming, after Revelations. I mean, we're technically in an incomplete story, all, in fact has not come to pass, right? I don't know of any way to determine who's interpretation is superior, and that's clearly a problem.

They don’t teach you how to become LGBTQ, because that isn’t a choice. What they do is teach you to tell if you are LGBTQ so you can decide for yourself. But I guess that’s projection - religion only indoctrinates you while education gives you the tools and let’s you decide how to use them

@aaronfreeman5264 I think his proposals for communism are wrong and unattainable, but his criticisms of the world he lived in were very correct. People lived under nightmarish conditions during the Industrial Revolution, and religion acts as a psychological opiate to make their suffering bearable. This is why people turn to religion when times are tough.

And you don't teach kids about religion by just telling one of them is true, you teach them about all the major world religions and let them decide for themselves.

@frankhansman2111 True - they all targeted the churches, partially because the church held a lot of political and cultural power in their society (the Tsar was literally the head of the Orthodox church), and partially to place themselves at the head of a new civic religion. None of them did what they did to actually eliminate religion, but to simply -place themselves and their state at where the church once was. And I can't exactly "abandon" my beliefs when I think there's no evidence for the existence of any god, and moreso, spirituality is a nonsensical concept with zero explanatory power.

@sv3931 Well spoilers - I'm not a fan of the other two either. And assuming one of those two is Judaism (it changes from person to person), Christianity inherits most or all of its rules depending on your sect or interpretation of the Bible.

@sv3931 I can’t tell which post of mine you’re referring to, but religiosity clearly doesn’t prevent inhumane actions in all people. The difference in scale of mass murder by those 20th century tyrants is far better attributable to materialistic and sociological reasons: ie massive populations, history of authoritarian rule, pre or emerging industrial revolution.etc. Attributing those massacres to atheistic morality is little more than biased conjecture.

@sv3931 Personally? Not that often, between once a week to once a month, but that isn’t the problem. The problem is the religious nuts who are trying to enshrine their values into law, or teach their religion as science in schools (re: creationism), or have government favour their religion in other ways (7 commandments in public buildings). Just take a look at any American dollar bill: “In God We Trust” - that was added in the 50s.

@sv3931 History for Thinkers has a good video about this - the Nazis were clearly trying to turn the state into Germany’s new religion so they can channel the devotion and meaning Christianity once held for these people into itself. And the USSR did similar. In fact, I think Frank mentioned the French Revolution at one point - they did that in a far less subtle, more literal way. when they established the Cult of Reason to replace Catholicism after driving it out of France, then later, the Cult of the Supreme Being under Robespierre.

@sv3931 My point regarding Meditations is that it’s at best, suggesting Stoicism to you (not even that arguably, since Marcus did not write these for public consumption), the NT on the other hand is trying to sell you its religion. It may have philosophy as well but that is not it’s primary function. I’ve alluded to this in numerous posts beforehand, but depending on your interpretation, Jesus pretty explicitly says all the OT laws are still in effect (Matthew 5:18). You can argue that it’s still only the spiritual training for the Jews, but judging from the amount of non-Jewish Christians that still quote the Old Testament, especially for political reasons, clearly that isn’t a unanimous consensus.
