  1. Throughout about the 50s to the 90s, the US was in constant tension with a hostile USSR, and the world damn near almost ended in October 1962 with the Cuban Missile Crisis. Maybe that's an even more unsettling thought, but my point is that while things can spiral out of control in the present and scale into a nuclear conflict, we are still much safer from it than we were in the 60s-80s. That isn't to say you should get complacent about the nuclear threat, but don't live your life as if it's right around the corner.
