I remember having some internet issues years back, so I googled my internet provider's contact details, but didn't realize I had clicked on a sponsored link instead. I wasted an entire fucking hour on queue only for it to not even be the right company. I quickly learned to scroll past sponsored links after that.

Google docs is still pretty good for what I need it to do, probably because most of their efforts at squeezing consumers are focused on their high volume applications (ie: Youtube, Google Search, Lens)

I feel like there's some truth to the effectiveness - there's no way they could sustain businesses for very long if advertising wasn't at least somewhat effective. My theory is that our current media landscape is so utterly saturated with ads that people are increasingly able to just tune them out or ignore them, because they kinda have to. The intelligent solution would be to simply scale back the amount of ads we see, but there is no short term business incentive to do that - the big tech companies rely on that sweet, sweet ad revenue and no individual company would willingly scale back their marketing just to benefit the larger attention economy. As the yields on traditional ads increasingly dry up, platform providers like Google have to make ads more and more unavoidable just to keep the profits going - which makes users even more suspicious which makes them clamp down even harder. I think this situation has to come to a head eventually - either they degrade their service so much that the alternative platforms become competitive even with fewer resources, or people get so fed up that the government starts nationalising these platforms or they start regulating/breaking up these corporations.
