I feel like Musk got a free ride for so many years off most people knowing basically nothing about rocketry and self driving cars, so when they hear this being delivered confidently, they just shrug and say "Oh that's cool, can't wait to see it happen I guess" and go on with their day, while the gullible super-fans dominate the discourse and continue to glaze him up. That was my reaction at least. It's only when he started getting into things that directly affect normal people (politics and running Twitter) that people began to realize how full of it he really is.
