I'm really confused by people who say we should actually abolish the police, like who's going to intervene in assaults or DV cases?

8MercurySunrise8 That kind of anarchy was already tried in the Wild West, justice had even less footing there than in the cities. You’d be putting justice even more into the hands of capitalism than it already is. That corruption is obviously terrible, but what issues are there that couldn’t much more easily be solved by sweeping reforms?

@oldskatepunker Honest question - how would you go about addressing the militarization within the police force, given your perspective as an officer?

@oldskatepunker I can see where you're coming from, and a general defunding of the police seems more like a misguided punishment than a solution. However, there does seem to be a systemic problem in some areas that breeds these "warrior cops" who have an "us vs. them" mentality with the public, and equipment that makes them more like occupiers than public servants and worse, an insular culture that keep these cops from accountability when they go too far. I've heard way too many stories of this shit going on and the officers involved getting away with it to believe that there isn't a widespread issue here. But that solution does seem sensible, obviously there's no silver bullet here but it's something I doubt anyone would disagree with.
