It's about "laziness" and "who's going to give them less grief". As Simon said, it's far easy to scan social media all day looking for "hurty words" than it is to get up off one's flabby arse and do some actual police work. Safer and cheaper, too. The other side of the coin is that the police are far more scared of the hateful, unhinged "social media influencers" who'll get them "cancelled" if they don't investigate "hate crimes" against minorities than they are of the criticism of a reasonable member of the general public who's suffered a genuine crime.
