But hang on...we can barely even manufacture a paper bag in the UK these days...what use would we have for rare earth metals that are components in "green" electricity generation? We'd have to import the finished machinery from elsewhere anyway...

The whole idea of "net zero" is absolute fool's gold...and to think that it's some sort of substitute for fossil fuel dependence is to completely misunderstand the nature of the problem the human race faces: gross overpopulation and excessive energy consumption (which is only going to get worse as the third world industrialises). Both need to be drastically reined in.

@MJ-vj1un Well yes: I understand this. But we don't make them here now, and I doubt we will in the future. Hence we have to import them anyway. Anyway, I'm afraid to say that Simon (although normally reliable) is actually wrong on this point. It's not lithium we need to secure from Ukraine. Lithium is a relatively easily obtainable element, with plenty of sources in pro-Western countries. There are even small deposits in Cornwall, if we ever did decide to manufacture our own lithium batteries. What we need is neon gas used in the photolithography process of making integrated circuits. Now neon is a rare resource, and Ukraine is one of the few places in the world where it's extracted.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised to find that our "leadership" are such ideological fruitcakes, that there motive for sending troops really is some kind of "standing up to fascist bullies" nonsense...
