I adopted two strict rules about 25 years ago whenever I wanted to bring an item into my home. The first is that for anything new coming in, I had to get rid of something old. This would force me to think twice about buying whatever thing it was I was looking at because I had to decide on the spot what existing item I had to get rid of to make room for it. This rule worked 90% of the time and I still keep the in/out rule today. The second rule I adopted is having a place for every item in my home AND keeping the item in its place at all times. (A place for everything and everything in its place). A useful idea is following Maree Kondo's maxim "does it spark joy?" when deciding whether to keep an item in your home. If it doesn't, then toss it out or donate it.
