I'm Australian. I got qualified in Krav Maga self defence in 2015 after a woman walking home from a nightclub was graped and murdered that year. There were HUGE protest marches over it because the perpetrator had a long rap sheet S.A'ing women and was out on parole from a prior grape charge. So, I took it upon myself to learn how to defend myself at age 45. My instructor was a personal body guard and worked at well know places like the Voice Australia. He taught us that when it comes to defending yourself from a break and enter, if you use a lethal weapon (gun, knife etc) you're probably going to jail because it will be hard to prove you only used just the right amount of "reasonable force" to protect yourself. So, he advised us to keep ordinary household objects around the house that could double as a weapon in an emergency. You would be very easy able to argue that you used the right amount of force to meet the threat and you never intended to harm/kill the intruder, only to defend yourself, because you only grabbed say, your son's baseball bat, to defend yourself. Using a toy to defend yourself is MUCH easier to prove in a court of law. He even told us that should we ever have to go to court and explain why we used a certain technique against the attacker, he would come to court on our behalf and admit he taught us the particular move. But, he drummed it into us these techniques were for "life or death" situations only.
