@solareclipsetimer also remember that at one point the sub was dropped hard enough that the bolts holding the dome on sheared. They only had three or four of the bolts in at the time, but that is a lot of force.

Ultimately, Rush didn’t care. I believe he was a psychopath, and placed no real value on the lives of those who died with him. “Sometimes safety is just a waste”, as he would say.

You can’t weld on that. The heat treatment is part of strength, the heat of welding will interfere with that. These people were truly clueless.

@ I’ve never welded titanium, but I’ve done steel and welding on a finished pressure vessel is a big no-no. There’s changes to the crystalline structure that happen in the heat affected zone. You can also cause stress relieving, if it hasn’t already been adequately stress-relieved.

What I don’t understand is why you couldn’t build the normal spherical sector, then add an acrylic lens that wasn’t load bearing on the inside.

@ now that is a very clever idea! It looks like the refractive index of acrylic is about 1.49. Glycerol is about 1.47. You could probably use glycerol with an additional reservoir to the side.

I believe that he started out being on board with the plan, but as things went on he became increasingly alarmed. Finally the lightning strike was the last straw.

@solareclipsetimer that is the best way honestly. Things like defects in engineering are objective and provable, Rush’s personality is not. I remember that fellow who testified that Rush had endangered his life was absolutely enraged.
