@MrBeautifulmountain the diff between 1973 and 2013 is HUGE - U.S.A. is essentially self-sufficient in both OIL and GAS ( i.e. ENERGY) - and even in 1973 the USA was self-sufficient in oil, but quadrupling the Global Oil Prices by OPEC , had to be born by American Economy ( at that time by far the BIGGEST in the World ! )

***The US interest in the Middle East was never "oil for us", it was "oil for everybody (on our team)*** (as written by Daniell below) YEP - of course 'our team' means the EU, PLUS all the 'wars' - Iraq, Afghanisan, etc - are to keep the Global Oil Prices at whatever level USA wants and needs :-)
