As a european(from a certain territory where serfdom was still in effect when this war started) I can say that "bias" on adding allies or boons to the South side of American Civil War for most people outside US comes from the complete disparity of strength of both sides. It's the first modern war with modern tech, people are interested how it would have affected technology and tactics. Something that you can't have with Crimean War that happened shortly before it simply because neither Henry Repeater, nor Gattling Gun were there /cough/nor double action revolver, nor armored trains, nor non-french ironclads, nor even high degree of cartridge loaded firearms because both main beligerents were feudal societies stuck in middle ages/cough/ Maybe there's also an underdog bias mixed in. And a bit of a modern desire to see MORE americans shoot each other:D At least to outsiders(though I suspect that with conflict being so long ago even to locals too) the sociopolitical context is a bit lost. Maybe. Decemberist Uprisings and Polish Uprisings happened even earlier and I still have personal feelings on their outcomes:(
