Sorry for complete offtopic, but I noticed the topic of submarines and wanted to ask what I always wondered: How much cargo could "cow" submarines transport and how hard it was to load/unload them? The reasons I'm asking is a weird one too. Remember Siege of Leningrad? If I recall right, soviet submarines were build in a way that allowed them to pass through soviet channel system which included Leningrad. So I wonder if the city could have been supplied in secret if there was a hidden submarine dock, thus eliminating the (majority of) threat of air attacks that the lake Ladoge supplies faces?

  3.  @jochannon  1)how can one calculate the cargo capacity in "applique" external cargo bays if those were added to existing design? 2)which cargo can be safely transported outside pressure hull? 3)what about adding evacuees into return trips? How many extra people can be loaded without sabotaging the safety of the crew and boat?
