  2. B-52 is let down by lack of variants on its base. Instead tankers, transports, AWACS and many other roles were filled by either older planes(B-50's and even B-29 conversions) or planes build upon base of civilian models. Meaning that there was a gap for several years when bomber fleet switched to B-52, but the utility fleet was still prop planes. And mind you, utility aircraft have much longer effective lifespan. Tanker upon B-29 base would be useful even nowadays.
