I guess now we've gotten evidence as to "how can people not believe the nuke to be true and why a second bomb would be necessary"? Even though japanese were more on the side "US can't produce another one for several years" and not that they're impossible. However the fact that this is spread NOT as a joke by modern day public is a good example of how few people back then would have found it believable. As for why such a belief might have spread - I have a feeling that it's connected to more people witnessing photos of Tokyo firestorm and what conventional bombs did en masse.
