  1. 1)you mean Turkey Missile Crisis?;) The one where Khrushev bluffed, CIA inflated numbers to get more funding and USSR and USA actually cooperated to find diplomatic solution and even were discussing joint space missions behind the scene all at the same time? I love how it's still called the low point of relationship between USSR and USA despite what is happening for last few weeks. Still think Khrushev was bad?:D 2)it wasn't just his fanboyism. USSR had no way to economically support all of those programs. They needed parity in strategic nuclear front to continue existing and thus Khrushev concentrated all available specialists and budget into nuclear and missile programs. He also used it as a way to create diplomatic capital for USSR as even nowadays when people speak of soviet or russian achievements it's talks of Khrushev's space programm. No other soviet leader before or after him invested as heavily into making good PR image for USSR. Everyone after him just insulted him and kept riding on his achievements in this field. Including current embarrassment.
