1984 was written about 1930's. It took you almost a century to figure out that it's NOT about the future, it's about reality Orwell had seen already. However his critique of current was taken as a warning of far future and you all ignored it, lol:D

He hadn't had the experience of living through Stalin's rule himself so most of his experience is based on his experience in Spain which was a "test site" not only for new military tech and tactics, but also for propaganda and ideology. Collapse, infighting, oppression of ideas. Adding "screen that looks back at you" isn't that much of a stretch and is mostly a continuation of idea of "country of prisoners and guards".
