City is full of depressed people, desert is full of weirdos. Apocalypse just forces both to go outside ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯ P.S.: you can probably make a movie about misinformation and apocalypse tropes on how people believe the world ends and within a week you have raiders in BDSM gear... while 99% of society have no idea why a small town cut off from power for a few days by accidental car crash had gone insane.
