You mention only a specific set of plans which is interesting. But yeah, if you know anything about Great Patriotic War part of WWII then you'd know why soviets wouldn't hold back if attacked. No June 22 2.0:D Everyone always prepares to fight the previous war and for soviets it was one where the enemy seeked to exterminate everyone.

@laketaylora ever heard of War Plan Red/Orange/Black/Grey? Surely by same logic US was planning to attack all other nations in 1930's! What bastards they were, thanks goodness we fought them off... what do you mean by "no such attack happened and plan doesn't equal real events"?

@Drew Peacock you asked what was the point of nuking western Europe during invasion. To eliminate the threat. And to deny US forces an easy bases with access to soviet borders. USSR expected next war to be a copy of previous one, war for elimination of its populace. So any attack would be answered with full force.

Helpless against real soviets? No, just no. Helpless against Hollywood version of soviets? 50/50 Helpless against soviets from CIA reports asking for funding? Hell yeah!

@Drew Peacock 1)strategic nuclear weapons are reserved for USA and (much less likely) UK. USSR didn't have enough ICBMs to counter both USA and other NATO members. So in case of attack, it was the job of conventional forces and tactical assets to hold off and go on the counter offensive. While ICBMs would be still pointed at USA in case if it'll decide to push its aggression further. As history had shown, usually US abandons "allies" in such situations; 2)this is a plan to counter NATO invasion. Counter offensive with overwhelming use of firepower to wipe out forces on European continent, prevent drawn out conflict and possibility of attacks from this front in the future; 3)this plan already happens after nukes are used either way. This is a plan for counter offensive of remaining conventional forces after nuclear attack on soviet heartland. Or do you believe that after situation escalates conventional forces shouldn't be used to press any available advantage? Btw this was soviet strategy since Stalin, who put T-54 into never seen before or after scale of tank mass production as a "soft counter" to nuclear threat USSR had no equal answer to. To plant the idea that even if nukes were used in Operation Unthinkable type of scenario that enough of soviet forces and equipment will prevail to defeat invading elements and push back.

@Drew Peacock to eliminate a threat. You care about that land only if you plan to occupy it, not if you want to protect what you already have in case you were attacked.
