I'm pretty sure that it's the reverse in HoI 4 - in the game fall of Berlin means nothing to Germany with it's massive war support... except signifying that one more position was lost. But Steiner Hirohito is still coming with help any minute!;)

@SepticFuddy and you count "profit" only in monetary value? Specifically in paper?;) Iraq was a net loss for US in terms of money gained/money spent, BUT it is a huge leverage on region and oil market plus it was done mostly to appease Israel and Saudi Arabia, BOTH of whom are ironically best US friends in the region... and not only the region. Both want to get rid of any ME nation that is more powerful then them. They also both have expansion desire and a chip against Iran. The only reason US doesn't want to get military involved with Iran on their behalf is because Iran is involved in Russia/India vs China/Pakistan power struggle in the region and becoming an enemy of all 4 is not a great idea!:D

Read up on American Civil War in regards to "post was memories of generals". One of the reasons North won is because a certain commander didn't care of how he'd look if he'd run for presidency later, but instead cared for result. And he won the war for US. Can you guess whom it is? American WWII generals are evidently of the other type.

@SepticFuddy not sure if you deleted it or it just doesn't show, so I'll answer the bit I can see in preview: "The oil market trope is a ridiculous one. Our own fracking drives Mideast oil to its knees far more than any invasions can dream of, and our strategic" Reread my comment. Above all else it was a demonstration of power to WHOLE Middle East and a favor to local allies there, who want to leave a clear message about whom is the top dog in the region. And ME as a whole outproduces you as well as helps to control the market by being the "third leg".

@543soldier USSR did its part. There was not just a planned invasion, it was an EXECUTED invasion. But of continental territories! With what were we supposed to invade the islands themselves, huh? T-34-85's don't float, you know? We had neither the (surface) fleet, nor strategic and long range aviation required for it. Explain to me how USSR would invade Japan itself, please? It's just a myth. We had done all we could to fight Japan, the rest was ONLY up to americans. And if you mean provide troops for landing with american support, then why us? There are dozens of millions of chinese, who hated Japan. Arm, train, deliver. Maybe this way China wouldn't suffer such an inglorious continuation of its civil war where not just nationalists as usually seen, but de facto everyone lost and China was denied recovery help.

Cold War is still going on even when Russia(territorialy) and USA(economically) are both pressured by China while EU failed to consolidate as "reborn superpower" thanks to internal political struggles and cultural differences.

abe Lincoln imagine being one of 40 millions(by South Korean and Taiwanese estimates!) chinese, philipinos, koreans, thai, vietnamese and many other civilians, who died due to "innocent" Hirohito. Japan never admitted, never apologized, overwhelming majority of war criminals(almost all of high ranking ones) were never prosecuted, it is hailed in US, pictured as a victim, teached pure lies about the conflict for generations, all critique in media is villified and 1937 is never seen as start of WWII. Germany did a lot to try to make amends in those 80 years, Japan did nothing and had just only proven that you can be the biggest bastard and no one will care. Because to US and Europe, asians are to this day viewed as subhuman. Just look at this whole comment chain! Wow, such horror, such casualties!

Dex4Sure ask Kazachstan about Holodomor and poor ukranians. Check the dates too. The sources are easy to find. But I absolutely agree with you, bayonets were more effective source of forcing farmers into the state agrarian production. Soviets should have used those instead of trying to play with food market.

@Rrgr5 was there a difference?Current gripe between "east and west"(in Europe) can be traced back to the very revolutions of 1848-49 that influenced the views of Marx and Bismark among a whole generations of other political figures, writers and so on. But true division can be traced back to underlying cultural differences to the times of Roman/Christian split.
