The real question that rises from it most of the time is... could have others used the same tactics? I guess people just project the image of british STEN that was dirt cheap, add this bit about soviets on top and try to make "what if" scenarios for every side that wasn't able to pump out enough guns. Like, "what if japanese pumped out millions of cheapest possible submachine guns and overran americans". WIthout taking into account that not all SMGs are simple, cheap and above all reliable, that bold actions can also be produced in "last ditch" way and that most importantly ammunition isn't free. More SMGs waste more pistol ammo and despite being smaller then rifle cartridges and thus having less propellant, they burn through ammo fast and you end up using MORE propellant. So more explosives goes to small arms ammo production as a result. And it increases the strain on your chemical industry.
