Once again, people are reminded about paradoxical stand of japanese navy on submarines. They were able to design and build such technological marvels as I-400(yes, the idea of underwater carrier is a bit wonky, but just replace it with extra fuel and torpedoes and you'd get biggest cruiser submarine of WWII with highest independent operational range), but completely failed to both find a use for them and understand the need for protecting against them. In many regards Japan acted similar to pre-WWI mindset to warfare that technology doesn't matter that got millions killed even before WWII.
