  1. Well, I'm also wondering why only germans? Because I don't recall only germans using them. Late WWII designs adopted it in full swing with both T-44 and IS-3("false sides") designed with use of those. Attempts to uparmor soviet tanks also used such a solution though just welding more plates was used instead(especially on early T-34 where welded plates helped to prevent front upper glacis from cracking. The problem remained even on T-34-85 of one infamous for its pigheads factory while others thankfully stopped suffering from it).There were also attempts to use them by brits and americans. Hungary, Romania and Italy HAD used armor skirts during the war if I recall right.
