Mind you, it's a civilian geology prospector team, that lost their communications ship and thought that they were being attacked. So they use drill drones and mining charges to defend themselves while they try to contact higher up for evacuation. Since they're lost, the next one whom will show up would be cops to ask questions... so there always remains possibility of sequel, except it would need a very good script unless it want to turn into Independence Day 2 situation.

"Most advance ship in the universe" Yeah, sure, most advanced civilian scouting ship in universe crewed by a bunch geologists sent on peacefully mission and stuck fighting for their lives against armed locals, who shot down their communication ship after calling them under peacefully pretext. Here's their PoV as they have no idea what happened to second ship, they're clearly not equipped or trained for combat and their equipment literary is suited for digging rock(demolition charges and drilling drones).

@harveyjohnson17 Missuori is the 4th ship, by the end of the movie it had ammo detonation in rear turret. Gotta love those bulkheads and flash doors when they work properly.

No, just no. This was a bad idea. Just FINALLY make third Sherlock movie and you'll make a fortune. This one looks like a possible "barely covered the costs".

Accidentally helped to paint aliens as civies because their equipment looks not like weapons, but as tools of prospecting team. Driller drones and demolition charges. Probably a bunch of geologists on mapping mission on new world, maybe half of them still green...

@Jurassic Hero they ARE xenophobic, just not genocidal. After all you're just primitives to them, "barbarians". However there is a whole system to mine and one habitable planet full of natives. How do you proceed to mine it? What's the cheapest and easiest way? Make natives do it for you, turn them into tributaries. In exchange for some obsolete by your standards tech like basic FTL. And likewise make alien empire a multiracial one with the species from first movie being one of previous tributaries, who themselves had mined their home system for the empire and are now looking for new one to mine both to meet imperial quotas and to help sustain their homeworld. This allows for a potential sequel(which we won't get) between military patrol trying to find miners fate and Earth that had a few years to study and prepare. There is no stakes if Earth somehow gets alien tech and can fight off fleet in orbit, but equally no stake if they just glass planet from orbit. Here you get Earth trying to preserve it's independence and squeze out the future on its own terms while in case humans lose, it's also not a complete game over for humanity.

This is not a military vessel though, haven't said design flaws been obvious enough?

@johnd.1618 it would. Because somalian pirates had already proven that small boat with less then a dozen barely armed people and a bit of rope is enough to capture one. Now increase number of boarders to 50 people. You're one of 12 crewmen, would you oppose 50 buff guys with knives? You yourself highlight obvious parts of its civilian construction like lack of armor. I didn't see guns on the ship either, I've seen explosive charge projectors with very small range and nonexistant accuracy which clearly wouldn't work as weapons in space. Support? You mean drilling drones that have no ranged weapons of their own? Shield that works only for area denial to keep natives away from prospector's camp like an electric fence would with humans from 10000BC? I also haven't seen personal weapons, only exosuits for handling heavy cargo and protecting from enviroment. Or how they constantly leave humans to regroup or run away once they were "scared off". Face it, even if by accident on screenwriters and directors parts, aliens in the movie are civvies that came for geological studies. They've lost their communications vessel in collision with local sattelite and they had no idea if it was an accident or if it was shot down. What would you do in their place? Try to restore communication and call for help, while doing your best to protect yourself from natives. Even if that means weaponizing dynamite sticks and nailguns you had. Because the only thing that separates majority of tools from being (mostly bladed and blunt) weapons is ONLY the intent of the user. Pliers might not work, but screwdriver was born for good shanking;)

@harveyjohnson17 nah, it's better that way. Military would have just bombed everyone from orbit so my headcannon is that they've gunned down scared civvies, who crashed by accident:D

@harveyjohnson17 they go through 4 ship during the movie, what would a single Zum do? It's not Long Beach/Kirov that is armed with whole battery of tactical nuclear cruiser missiles.

Mind you, they're not going to be explaining anything as they're all dead. As for how they lost - it's a civilian geology prospector team, that lost their communications ship and thought that they were being attacked. So they use drill drones and mining charges to defend themselves while they try to contact higher up for evacuation. Since they're lost, the next one whom will show up would be cops to ask questions...

@Jurassic Hero Earth is still the only habitable world in the system. Antarctic has a lot of resources and yet no one can get them(we even have a superfluous international agreement about those reserves that will fall apart the day it would become profitable to mine them and wage war for that right:)). You start with housing for workers and production of tools then local ie orbital infrastructure then you switch to dismantling the system for raw resources. I know what xenophobic means. It's not an anthonym to exploitation, sorry to burst that bubble. Just like racism didn't somehow stop slavery, quite opposite in fact:D That's V. Or you've meant Pacific Rim? We can build robots too. Yet chinese child and forced labor is all the rage. Or should I remind you of the term "biorobots"? You either need those very humans to set up local production lines for your robots OR you need constant massive imports of robotic workforce into the system that has a workforce. I've said cheapest and easiest, not the only one. You want to be an ass that likes to show off with tech, but fails to keep numbers in the green for the board? Be my guest.

@kevincrosby1760 democrats weren't the ones, who screwed over british and germans vets after WWI. Or Russian ones after Afghan. No, the point is simpler. The more disabled vets fail in life after they "outlived" their usefulness, the less likely their voices are to be heard. And so the less likely they would be to oppose sending more young men to end up like them compared to armchair heroes aiming to "retire into politics" and do the opposite;)
