  1. Tbh my headcannon excuse for barrel extension of Auto 9 compared to normal Beretta was that barrel extension houses stabilizating gyroscope and direct feed camera under the barrel. One of the two iconic sidearms of 1980's alongside Terminator 1911 with unsustainable for the time laser sight.

  3. 30 shot one seems like semi show off gun that doubles up as a good "hold off" weapon when you have a dozen angry guys without guns waiting for when you run out of ammo or try to reload to introduce themselves to your face in a more personal manner. Fire one shot every few minutes or whenever one of the members of angry mob feels brave enough to volunteer to you;)

  4. ShKAS and MG-131 are two wildly different and yet equally fascinating approaches to the technical requirement of maximising firepower in form factor of medium rifle caliber MG. One increased rate of fire to crazy levels at the cost of barrel life, the other put higher caliber bullet in de facto rifle case to improve firepower at close range at the cost of long range ballistics. Makes one wonder what would happen if both approaches were to be combined. P.S.: there also was a prototype variant called UltraShKAS with something like 3000+ rounds per minute rate of fire and even worse barrel life. It's quite obvious why that one didn't get adopted for service and mass production 😅

  5.  @josedorsaith5261  more like second contact point. Robo have super strength so to speak, however he still holds it by one hand. Idk if he even needs to gimbal the gun since his hand already acts as smartgun mount. Maybe nitrogen cooling sleeve is in there too? And certainly MRD too. Murphy sends a LOT of 9mm downrange so he needs all the help he can get to keep this thing precise.

  6. I'd say that: 1)it sort of makes sense for SWAT/Trojan as they don't need full power assault rifle that will shoot through walls and injure civilians across the street from operation. GL can be used for smoke, gas and concussion munitions. 2)if you don't plan to giving your grenadier full weight AR, this might be a good option. Except I'm not sure how much value is in that collapsible stock in such configuration. And it also lacks GL sights.

  9. Weird off topic question: What stopped British designers from developing AT rifle based on locally produced under license 15mm Brno/BESA round instead of Boys rifle? Was it only the budget constraints? Or maybe some ingrained prejudice against semi- and quarter automatic guns(because such powerful rounds had to have some sort of mechanism that will "eat up" part of recoil force to be safe to shooter).

  10. On topic of germans inventing the concept of universal machinegun - wasn't Lewis used on aircraft(as both main armament and in turrets), vehicles and on a tripod? So it might not have been called one as the name in classification wasn't yet there, but it certainly does fit. Just like BAR and Fedorov coming out before Battle Rifle, Assault Rifle and so on were terms. P.S.: if some bastard will try to misread my comment as me claiming that BAR is an AR(while ignoring the rest including the context), I will become superstitious just so that I can curse you for 12 generations.

  11. It would be great if you could make videos on research programs like Abakan, Advanced Combat Rifle, Special Purpose Individual Weapons and others. What were the goals, what were the weapons developed, how far it had gotten, had the idea resurfaced, what parts were implemented, had the goal been achieved by some other means since then made moot by technology advances? A video per program?

I guess nowadays all these weird guns(briefcase guns, shoot behind the corner guns, guns that collapse into a container, guns that can be concealed in a sleeve, etc.) would still find usage, but they would require updating to either similar PDW rounds to MP7 uses OR to heavy subsonic ammo like VAL or Whisper, depending on if the gun has space for silencer. Besides nowadays for most of them you can get far better sighting equipment that would allow to use them "off hand" or in weird positions like lasers(existed, but were weak, fragile, bulky and too expensive), red dots(existed, but had same trouble) and even direct feed(technically exists nowadays, but we're not on smartgun level yet. But someone like secret service can probably afford and maintain it).

That's ironic part about all "last ditch" weapons is that they could have changed the situation if they were produced BEFORE situation became last ditch:D STEN and PTRD(not actually last ďitch, but it was much simpler then PTRS so it allowed to saturate infantry with AT rifles and then slowly switch them with PTRS) are only two examples when it worked out. MAS-36 could have worked out too

In 1941-1942 it was more about germans studying captured soviet equipment - several mortars were copied, gas system of AVT-40 was copied, many F-22 guns were trophies and documentation and tooling for that gun was also captured so it was turned into stop gap 3inch AT gun germans used in Africa against british before Pak40 was finished, they looked at T-34 and initiated VK.30 program, dropping all VK.20 projects, KV-1 influenced which Tiger was chosen over the other and so on. And then came 1943...

  16. Jonathan, was it possible to make a mountable belt feed mechanism for Bren and DP-28(original one, RP-46 is different gun in many regards and as far as I know there is no way to convert it back to using pans in the field) akin to how it was done in DShK?

  18.  @FelixValentiCh.  Muzzle Reference Device, integral part of Fire Control System ie FCS on NATO tanks since 1980's. For example all tanks in Desert Storm, including M60ASomenumber. T-90M(2017) is the first russian tank to ever have it and thus have FCS precise enough to require it. The task of MRD is to measure the barrel bend due to temperature and stresses and to adjust the aim accordingly. Without needed the barrel to cool off or sending tank to maintenance/factory for rezeroing the sights.

  24. Hopefully they won't be looked at in complete vacuum, but rather with their doctrine in mind(AK and RPD/RPK vs G3 and MG3). It's interesting to look at most famous assault rifle and battle rifle side by side when US army tries to force some battle rifle in .277 Fury into service by misnaming it as assault rifle 😅

  25. 4:40 When time and resources are limited I always try to choose PTRS/PTRD solution. Context: those are soviet AT rifles rushed into production in 1941. PTRS was overall better semi-auto rifle, PTRD was cheap, fast to produce, "good enough" and still reliable single shot rifle. They produced BOTH. PTRDs task was to saturate the army with AT rifles, PTRSs job was to rearm army with better one. So proper solution was to put FAL into service ASAP and start small scale production of EM-2 for paratroopers, marines, vehicle crews and so on that would have allowed to iron out all the problems in the meantime. Yes, logistics hates doubling analogues. But they have operated with worse during the wars and they're not exactly filling the same niche at that stage.

  27.  @Hasmasnafg  eventually, but not at first. Plus Germany, USSR, Japan, UK and Italy have never afforded to shift to all metal planes, only US did. And USSR didn't fight US so 50/50 on that. I'd say it was quite effective up until 1942 and the bigger problem was the planes it was mounted upon at first.

  30. I'm going to be honest, this looks like a matchlock some peasant during Deluge would make. No idea if it's because craftsman wasn't a real craftsman or if they were somehow so short on time that it's the best they could do. And yes, it's unfair to say so about "last ditch" guns made by a couple of guys, who probably had very basic idea what a firearms was when they started and had no means to produce them. I wonder if japanese "last ditch" rifles looks worse?

  34.  @lapantony  they were. Meanwhile Ju-87 and majority of other planes weren't. Your point? IL-2 wasn't. Mosquito famously wasn't. The nations I've listed had all-metal airframes as exceptions, not as rules.

  36.  @robsnizzle79  meanwhile .280 was a first gen assault rifle round similar to 7.62x39. It MIGHT have ended up being basis of second generation round just like case of 7.62x39 was used to create 5.45x39, but that's NOT a guaranteed outcome. Plus .280 kind of had a heavy case. So it would have likely stepped down for 5.56x45 either way, but that doesn't mean I'm saying that .280 was bad, just that its time had passed. It would have been great to have it and FAL instead of M14 until M16 entered the scene.

  40. I always like guns like these or south american garruchas or other break action/falling block military pistols of the time. Especially the ones that tried to become a double carry option and use same ammo as rifles used by troops. Revolver isn't something in the budget of simple soldier of 19th century after all:D
