Our chance to meet anybody is so low due to both distances and TIME(since there is no universal start date for evolution, birth of civilization, etc. We can be among others, we can be first, we can be late) that any effort invested into it beyond normal scientific studies of the universe is a wasted effort. If it happens, it happens. Our job is to preserve biological life, intelligence in our universe and knowledge of our civilization. Mind you, neither of these 3 goals requires survival of humanity either...

No? They haven't been invented yet, you say? So you were speaking out of your ass? Ok, expand the point about preserving intelligence in the galaxy - make sure intelligence still exist at least on a level where it can read and comprehend comments it tries to answer to in sarcastic fashion and only AFTER that try to preserve it:D Here, an addition for your clause.
