  1. A piece of information just released about last night's attack on Feodosia confirmed earlier theory that the Ukrainians have been supplied with British war-stock Storm Shadow missiles, which are not compliant with the 300km restriction in the Missile Technology Control Regime. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported shooting down two of the AFU Su-24s involved in the attack near the village of Zhovten in Nikolaev, which is about 125km northeast of Nikolaev City, 100km from the nearest Russian positions on the left bank of the Dniper - and some 370km from Feodosia. In fact to range Feodosia with 290km-range MTCR-complaint export Storm Shadows, the Ukrainians would have to launch from practically overhead of their front-line positions in Kherson. Obviously a very dangerous proposition. The obvious conclusion here is - as I surmised earlier - that the Ukrainians have been provided with 550-km range British weapons after the shorter-ranged export missiles ran out, which also neatly explains why they have been attacking targets in the south of Crimea recently when previously those were out of reach. This brings to mind another report I read today, which is that something like a quarter of Europe's total stock of air defense systems have been given to Ukraine - and presumably far more than a quarter of their total supply of ammunition. The Russian talking point that NATO is "fighting them with Ukrainian hands" thus would seem to me to be really quite true - with the necessary corollary that Ukrainian losses do in fact impinge on the military potential of NATO. The "Ukrainian" cruise missile campaign is thus not really Ukrainian, it's British and should be thought of as such. As for the attack itself, the Russian MoD also stated that the LST Novocherkassk was damaged in the attack, which is rather odd given the ship photographed by observers (of which there is a fairly good view available) resembles an oil tanker and the explosion and subsequent fire looked far more like petroleum than ammunition. Perhaps it was loaded with oil for some reason and the fire and smoke completely obscured its large, prominent superstructure - or perhaps the MoD is playing games with us. We shall have to see if pictures of the aftermath leak out.
