@mattdavies8153 within context it definitely makes sense, since geography trumps practically everything. If you look at how the peoples of the west have become (and I am not saying that in a judgmental fashion), or other peoples for that matter, like the arabs. The arabs conquered north africa and southwest Asia in a few generations. Those were hardy men, back then. Same for the huns, mongols, any kind of steppe people really. Africa has very poor geography, very few if any navigable rivers, and not really coupled to seaports, which it has very few too, so no easy unlocking of the hinterland. Not a great climate for people, especially in the interior (tropical diseases), very large natural obstacles. If it had the geography of europe we would be typing this in an African language.
But apart from that, as soon as a civilization gets it better, it turns soft, and that makes hard times, which will make hardy men.
