James Cameron also owns a good chunk of Triton Submarines. A company that Rush hated because a lot of his potential customer base talked to them and decided to not go on the Titan.

I would be more interested in the investigations of the financials. did 100 million really go into Oceangate? how deep were they in debt?
7
It should be noted that real manned dsv pressure hulls get hundreds to even thousands of pressure tests to their max dive deoth often taken a year or two of tests before they put the vessel out to sea. Oceangate didn't even do a handful of full scale pressure tests on their pressure hulls.
5
logic on carbon fiber submersibles says they will survive the first deep dive but you have no idea how many more full dive cycles it will survive. hence do not use it on manned deep craft but on remote operated ones you can easily scan to see if it is cracking.
5
there is no real financial incentive for manned craft to go to that depth when ROVs are not only safer but cheaper for the tasks that are needed by military. oil and gas companies. You have to be either a gov't or rich individual to form a outfit like Victor Vescavo did for manned expeditions. Its often scientific research that this done for or just pure exploration which are a noted niche operation.
5
it was not a matter of if but a matter of when the failure was going to occur. this matter of not knowing when is why no one uses carbon fiber hulls for repeat manned deep sea submersibles.
4
they also refused to leave the sinking ship and attacked the coast guard that was trying to rescue them.
4
@solareclipsetimer real deep diving submersibles have rovs along to assist in the operation. they can even help the submersible if it gets entangled in the rigging (a well documented risk in certain shipwrecks such as the Titanic) or cannot rise for some reason. It wouldn't have helped the Titan but the fact Rush didn't care about getting some to help out with known dangers shows how careless he was
4
@solareclipsetimer he boasted about selling 30 Titans and already having cyclops 3 and 4 models in production by 2023 in an article I found dating back to 2020. the entire business model was a failure from conception.
3
I still have not seen anything that Boeing actually sold it and why just what the Oceangate CEO said. Of course considering how often the CEO has been confirmed as lying I wouldn't be surprised if he just got it out of the trash.
3
@solareclipsetimer testing it like every other deep sea manned submersible would have revealed it was a death trap.
3
there was no market. no one wanted what he was offering. the oil and gas companies use unmanned vehicles and if they want a manned vehicle they go to Triton Submersibles for a craft that is going to last 30 years hence why they would spend 50 million and only carry one or two people. .
3
@michaelatkin9649 its considered fine for unmanned deep sea vehicles that you can scan after every trip to see if the hull weakens. Due to size and no need for a huge amount of empty space inside the pressures being applied are different then on a manned deep sea hull as well. So an unmanned deep sea hull made out of carbon fiber hull is considered viable and potentially very cost effective.
2
@solareclipsetimer but that would admit the design was a failure and a waste of money
2
Look up Triton Submarines. They have lots of acrylic submersibles. When you do get very deep your viewports are small since well you going to be using cameras to see what is there since there is no light and normal human visibility is pretty much nonexistent.
2
they led the rescue effort
2
he wasn't wealthy. if he had wealth then he would have just bought one of the actual deep sea submersible companies like James Cameron did.
2
@solareclipsetimer Composites World has several articles dating before the tragedy that are just fluff pieces for better lack of a word. Two very interesting ones you should look up. Oceangate to build two new deep sea submersibles. Composite Submersibles Under Pressure in deep deep waters. The second dates from 2017
1
@solareclipsetimer damn yt deleted my comment. Composites World is the source you should look at. Several articles were for all intents boasting about Oceangate prior to the final dive
1
@katrinat.3032 he only got 12 mill in inheritance and over the course of decades spent most of it. Oceangate apparently if someone testifying is to believed went through 100 mill and Oceangate was deep in debt along with Rush who was putting his own money in it.
1
@katrinat.3032 nope.
1
@solareclipsetimer the warning were meant to go off during a dive. not be recorded data to examine later. since it didn't warn him in real time the readings must have been faulty rather then be a poorly designed system that everyone else said was the equivalent of an airbag deployed signal light. you can see the airbag is already deployed. you want an airbag system readiness indicator.
1
the thing is people in the industry outright said there was no profit in Oceangate's business model since no one wanted these submersibles for oil and gas nor military usage. Unmanned deep sea craft are where the actual money is.
1
it had lots of failure points. one or another was going to doom it.
1
they weren't escaping war and poverty. they were going to a richer country to get welfare. the majority were from Pakistan, Egypt and had paid the equivalent of five years of the wages they got in the rural villages they lived in. You know nothing of why there are millions of military aged males going to western countries.
