  1. To avoid creating a dictatorship, the first President of the United States George Washington (who was the only President to run as Independent) promoted the idea of a two-party system … Republicans and Federalists. To be fair, he would not associate his self with either party; instead allowing the citizens to vote which party “they” wanted to run the government. Also, to avoid dictatorship, he set the precedent that Presidents should not stay in office until they died … but rather would not be allowed more than two four-year terms in office. John MacDonald (the first Prime Minister of Canada) created a slightly different type of system … by being a member of both the Liberal and Conservative parties … which of course could never work … as the two parties were “bound” to be in competition with each other. Both George and John were trying to avoid dictatorship … and by setting up the voting system … thankfully managed to succeed in that regard. When multiple parties exist however … the old expression “partyism” … modern expression “party politics” hinges on to the “riding.” “Let the vocal wars begin” … as the party members from each group … to gain votes … and try their best … to upstage each other. American and Canadian citizens continually complain about how sick they are of “dirty politics.” I am quite content to see the politicians trying to dig up dirt on those in each other’s parties … because it keeps all of them on tenterhooks … watching their steps … in case they are caught performing any underhanded business. They want to appear at their best … as they don’t want to fall out of favor with the voters … whose votes in turn they depend on … to either gain … or to stay “in office.” The alternative is dictatorship … where one man decides what the citizens deserve and do not deserve … and if anyone is caught backbiting that one man in power … life could … and often does … end up being very short indeed. When it pertains to competitive political leaders … mess is wonderful. It means that the systems of government set up by George and John … are more or less … working the way they planned. Thank you … George Washington and John Macdonald.
