Having been raised in a Christian culture ... where Catholics and Protestants could never see "eye to eye" ... it seemed to me as a child that something was very wrong with "that picture." Now I am convinced that there is everything wrong with the WHOLE picture painted by religious mythology ... bragging of being literal truth. At least faith in the scientific theory that the universe and electricity always existed ... no creator ... no plan ... and that suffering of all forms of life is natural ... keeps us earthbound ... and stops our imaginations from going completely out of control over those words "enlightenment" ... "SUPER-natural" ... and ... "SALVATION."

If you believe that other people's religious books are "shallow" ... then it's only fair of you to add your own religious book to the pile as also being "shallow." Human nature that suffers from tunnel vision ... IS shallow ... so it follows that all books compiled by human nature ... will be shallow. That word "deep" leaves EVERYTHING to be DESIRED.

@glenliesegang233 I've never been impressed by the words of Shakespeare or Harlequin romance stories. Shakespeare's words go right over my head ... and I don't want the words from Harlequin romance to enter my head in the first place.

@glenliesegang233 Being that I now believe the universe and electricity always existed and that it never was created ... there isn't any more religion in my brain. I wasn't born believing anything. I was programmed by my parents and those in my culture to invest my faith in the story that it was a god that created the universe. And, no matter what we believe ... because we ARE creatures of ego ... we can't escape being egotistical concerning our personal systems of belief.

@4uRicki All religion was created because of FEAR ... not TRUST. If people had trust that a god would not punish them ... there wouldn't BE any religion ... and theologians promoted that TRICK of the TRADE. "You give me your money ... and I will tell you that your soul is SAVED." It was that teaching that God is judgmental that keeps devotees in these cults ... begging and praying and groveling to this supposed god for forgiveness of sin. I used to believe in the existence of a creator ... but not any more. And I am far from being alone. Thankfully … now that hundreds of members of clergy of various religions are leaving their indoctrinations behind ... there is hope for everyone. From the book ... Apostle to Apostate: The Story of the Clergy Project … authors … Catherine Dunphy, Richard Dawkins When you are reared to think of your faith and its leaders as infallible, dissent can be an unsettling thing. This is particularly true for clergy, who have devoted their lives to the subject of faith. I therefore especially hope that this story reaches those clergy who have yet to articulate their doubts. As they struggle through this process, I am thankful that they can look to the Clergy Project as an example of community and humanism as an example of good. As former clergy who have left churches of every denomination, synagogues, mosques, convents, monasteries, and theological institutions, we stand as examples of the reasonableness of doubt and its thoughtful conclusions. I cannot help but think that we offer a compelling voice for why science and secularism do a better job than religion and superstition of answering the so-called ultimate questions.

@4uRicki Of course theologians wanted us to believe that a devil exists. But that also is a silly teaching. Because a devil could not exist without the approval of the head god ... and that would mean that the head god was evil for ALLOWING the evil devil to exist. I read once where someone had referred to god and the devil as being "the evil twins." One is as mean and cunning as the other. Those theo-illogical stories were conjured in the imaginations of ancient men. The stories were meant to put FEAR into humans ... and those men and their fairy tales ... succeeded.
