I remember running the full length of the hospital after I heard one of these kids coughing. If they were standing, they would begin coughing without a break, until they turned purple. The saliva would be thick and hanging from their mouth to the floor. When they had run out of breath, they would inhale with a loud whooping sound. Pertussis lasted for about three months and often after this it appeared that their airways had been damaged, and as a result they got infections a lot easier. It made me realize how important and necessary vaccinations were. This could have been totally prevented.
