Wood is the author of “The Arrogance of Faith.” Dr. Benjamin Rush, believed that color differences were only skin deep. The African’s darker skin was the result of leprous disease, Rush theorized. Once a cure was found, the black person’s skin would begin to lighten. In other words, it was a medical problem.
