Trump went so far as to say that if abortion were recriminalized, "there has to be some form of punishment" for women who have abortions, a position so extreme that even antiabortion groups such as Right to Life disavowed it. He quickly modified his stance to call only for punishment for the person performing the abortion, saying "Women punish themselves."
