It's a known fact that psychedelic drugs broaden people's approach to the meaning of life from their "perspectives." No near-death experiences necessary. My guess is, ancient humans (before religion ever existed) had near death hallucinations. What do you suppose that those ape-like unindoctrinated humans thought they saw when they were hallucinating from shortage of oxygen to their brains? When any animal dies, the body immediately starts to decompose. Near death hallucinations experienced by human animals are not real death.
