I watched and listened from the sidelines and my heart sank as I heard it repeated again and again in some form or other. "Professor Hawking, what does your research tell you about the existence of God? Or "Is there room for God in the universe you describe?" or, more directly, "Do you believe in God?" Always the answer was the same. No, Stephen did not believe in God and there was no room for God in his universe.

I suggest that only Stephen Hawking's theory, that the universe in one form or another always existed, could result in creationists concluding that their own systems of belief just might be wrong. If Stephen was correct, then the universe never was created, and that would mean that the suffering of all forms of life is natural, as in "survival of the fittest."

@drsatan7554 If a scientist is asked the question, “Do you believe that the universe was created,” and the scientist answers, “Yes,” that is not science. That is religion. Religion is the study of mythical gods. Science is the study of all things other than mythical gods. Please don't confuse the two as being united.

@drsatan7554 I'm an Atheist. If devotees used the word "thoughts" rather than the word "souls" ... I suggest it would seem ridiculous, when human animals die, to say "His or her thoughts will either go flying off to heaven ... or to hell ... or to reincarnate." Without the word "soul," there couldn't be any religion. All stories are based on what the soul is thinking, and what the soul is doing, and where the soul came from, and where the soul is going after death of the physical body. Fortunes have been made by theologians who taught that the soul is a gift from God, and that women must never have abortions, because abortions offend God's gift to humanity. Evolution of the soul is a huge seller in religion. It means that your soul is ever upgrading and will hopefully soon make the grade of God's "entire" approval of enlightenment and salvation … or … that in the afterlife something horrible could happen to your soul. If you remove the word "soul" from religion, you will not have anything but ground zero.

As an Atheist, I believe that the universe (and consciousness) always existed ... no creator or plan involved ... and that suffering in all forms of life ... is natural. If, as children, we were indoctrinated by the following information, rather than being taught that suffering for wicked souls exists in a supposed afterlife, we would not have any fear of death. @drsatan7554 You "believe" that you know ... so you also suffer from "belief." One cannot "seek" truth, and at the same time claim to "know' truth. Seeking truth is humble. Claiming to KNOW truth is arrogant. And claiming to know truth would put you on the same level of knowledge as the CREATOR. And doesn't your religion teach you that pride cometh before the fall? @drsatan7554 The danger of humans using words in books labeled as being holy information from what they are certain is the creator of the universe, is that the devotees reading the words will believe that they know what the creator was ... and is ... "thinking." Case in point in the following ... @drsatan7554 All we have are systems of belief. To say that any of us owns truth ... is just plain arrogance. If we owned TRUTH, we wouldn't be able to change our systems of belief. If I was raised in a Muslim culture, and said that I had found truth, those in Christian cultures would say that I was telling lies ... and ... visa versa. We SEARCH for truth, and that search is humbling ... or at least it should be humbling ... to each one of us.

@drsatan7554 Well, if you admit that you don't know truth and you don't own truth, then all that is left, is that you are "seeking" truth. And when you state that I'm a lying theist, you are wrong. Theists believe that the universe was created by an all-powerful, all-knowing being. I believe that the universe always existed ... no creator in existence ... no plan involved, and that suffering of all forms of life, is "natural."
