GM and Ford at least understood/conceded that the rest of the world isnt thrilled by US design, engineering, materials and quality hence it had separate divisions worldwide that operated autonomously from the US. Americans are not known for style or quality, so the likes of Lincoln, Cadillac etc were never going to work in Europe. I think many Americans would actually be surprised to learn that many of their vehicles actually come from their European arms.
