There's far too many people obsessed with reliability as if it's a major issue but no one makes massively unreliable cars any more but you should ALWAYS keep cash in reserve when buying an older car just for problems. If you don't you are an idiot.

What sort of idiot buys a 15 year old car of ANY make and expects it not to cost them money to maintain? If you're so poor but you want a luxury car then you're STUPID to buy a 15 year old car. Buy a newer, less complicated car or get a new job and wait until you can afford a better car.

There are cheap ways to run cars on reconditioned parts anyway, and if you're a bit handy you can do a lot yourself just like you said you could do with houses.
