"China needs to learn from the world, and the world needs to learn from China." COVID zero policy works when the case number is relative small and before the emerging of highly infectious omicron variant. The elderly in Shanghai (and everywhere!!!) need to be vaccinated AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. (Canadian style of vaccine mandate will help). Long term, China needs to learn to live with the COVID virus, like it or not. It should not repeatedly go through lock down on successive waves.

Fantastic video. COVID is dangerous, but China also need to prioritize the physical and mental well-being of the citizens. Lock down is a short term solution, not long term.

China also needs a vaccine mandate, especially for the elderly. This is one thing it can learn from the westerm countries.

@TheNewGreenIsBlue What Shenzhou said was not helpful to the reputation of China and Chinese people. As a fellow Chinese, I only want the best of our people. I was born in Hong Kong (now a part of China) and have colleagues from Shanghai. Seeing what's going on in both cities break my heart.

@Shenzhou. Vaccination mandates are welcomed among Canadians (many serveys will tell you that). Governments have a responsibility to keep people safe, whether it is Canada and China. Certainly vaccine mandate will be useful for China. Hong Kong (which is part of China) has already adopted one.

@Shenzhou. When it comes to protecting the lives citizens during a health crisis, government need to be decisive. If Canadian citizens are not happy with the government, we can vote the party out. Of course, the Chinese can't do that.

@Shenzhou. The priority of Shanghai is to immediately vaccinate the more than 1 million of unavaccinated elderly people in Shanghai (I am quoting Cyrus). The low vaccination rate for Shanghai (and Hong Kong) is both unacceptable and embarrassing. The lock down is a short term solution, not long term.

I grew up in Hong Kong. I have no idea why Carrie Lam didn't lock down the city earlier in the omicron wave. 8000+ death is simply unacceptable. Should the government be responsible for the decision making? Maybe the Hong Kong people should vote for their government........

@kellikelli4413 The best way to protect the seniors from COVID is to make sure their got vaccinated (and booster as indicated). Lock downs, especially prolonged ones, are hard for seniors as well.

@Shenzhou. It is not too late. There are vaccine mandate for seniors in Canada. In Ontario, the vaccine rate (2+dose) for seniors is 94%. Hong Kong seniors vaccination rate was embarrassing but had picked up after the current wave. It is certainly not too late for Shanghai to ramp up the vaccination.

@Shenzhou. Canada doesn't force seniors to vaccinate against their will (must be another misinformation from Chinese MSM). But without the vaccinate seniors could not go to restaurants or movies etc. That's why the vaccination rate is so high.

@Shenzhou. The immunity from the vaccine takes effect 2 weeks after the vaccination, not a few months. Please be informed.

@Shenzhou. If you have friends and relatives living in Shanghai (or anywhere in China), please give them the correct information and ask them to vaccinate ASAP. This is important especially for seniors.

@Shenzhou. The immunity of the first dose starts 2 weeks after immunization. But you will still need 2 dose to be considered fully immunized. My colleague from Shanghai has asked her family to get vaccinated. You should do the same.

@Shenzhou. of course I got vaccinated. It is the public duty. If more Shanghai people got vaccinated 4 to 5 weeks ago at the beginningof the lock down, Shanghai will be opening now as the immunity will kick in and the rate of infection will decline.

@Shenzhou. 1st dose is not fully immunized but certainly better than nothing. Check the numbers. It is definitely NOT TOO LATE for the Shanghai people (or everyone else) to get their first shot.

@TheNewGreenIsBlue you are correct. Vaccine is never strictly mandated for seniors in Canada. But it is highly encouraged. You need the Vaccine passport to go to restaurants, movies theaters or hockey games or visit someone in the long term care home. I have a slightly different opinion regarding vaccine mandate in China. I think it would work well, since mainland Chinese generally trust their government (they really don't have a choice).It works well in Hong Kong, which is a part of China.

@Shenzhou. It takes 21 to 28 days to get the second dose and become fully vaccinated. But even one dose of vaccine offer some level of immunity to COVID. And the immunity starts 14 days after the shot. The fact that more than 1 million senior Shanghai residents DIDN'T EVEN GET THEIR FIRST SHOT is fueling the outbreak.
