  1. It's actually normal that people unite behind the government when there is a threat from outside. Western governments love to abuse this (since pretty much centuries) for just that reason, mostly making up threat. In case of Russia, its government does not need to make anything up. Russian people DO look at western press and what it says about Russia and of course hear when western politicians talk about how Russia must be brought down, ruined, destroyed and alike. There is only one situation when something like that leads to a new government: when the people think that the current government is too weak to response to it. So you wouldn't get people vote for a pro west government, but an extremely anti west government. Thankfully Russian people are was smarter than our western ones...
