@SabineHossenfelder Oh, zero reason to wonder, it's exactly like it is and that since a long time. It's not about improving the country and the lives of peopel in it, but to create "growth" = more mone for the already far too rich. Such things don't go well together.

You likely need (a real) AI to ever have a chance for something like a Stargate. Not even because humans are too stupid for it, there is only so much intelligence can rach, since you can't really over-understand something. But a real AI could and would combine the thinking process of million and billions of people if not more, without wasting endless energy on "this is mine! I won't share it!" The thing AI will easily stomp us with is collaboration. Something humans are rarely willing for out of fear, greed and stupidity.

It's overall what earth does anyway. Atmosphere heats up -> you get more brutal weather, includes tornodos. Peopel seem to forget, that earth had been MUCH hotter in the past already. Our weathersystem is gigantic, our economy is a joke in comparison. Doesn't mean, that we shouldn't improve our technology and take more care about waste in general.

There is always a "too much", as the words say. You can even kill yourself with too much water. And yes, we should improve our food quality and instead of pumping extra fat, salt sugar into it, we could increase the quality with vitamines and minerals and that easily while remaining the taste. Happiness is also important and stress is one of the worst poisons for the human body and can even also lead to a fat liver without alcohol and calories. So to push people into a life they don't want to isn't exactly a good solution. When people are happy with their keto diet or vegan diet, good for them. But to force people to live like that, can cause more misery than it is worth it.

In the end this shouldn't have happend at all, not even the coup, but when you let the coup happen, than the only morally sound way is to ask the people in Ukraine who want to follow this coup and who don't. Instead the coup regime, financed and armed by NATO, used military violence to force those against the coup in line - what didn't work out and just brought even more suffering. Russia tried for whole 10 years to reach a peaceful solution, only securing crimea, out of many reasons, but one of those was that majority of crimean citizens are Russian, so it was quite obviouis that when given the choice, that would either join Russia or at least want to be independent (for which it is too small and when put against a militaristic aggressor likely the coup regime in Ukraine without any chance to survive) but not go along with that coup and stay in Ukraine. Same for Donbass, but there Russian's were a minority so it was overall more risky (though I still think that Putin, looking at how far it had to go now, still thinks back and blames himself a bit to not have secured this area much sooner, along with Crimea, before NATO and the coup regime were able to arm up that much and with some insane warmonger like Biden and his fascists in power who LIVE for warmongering). The most obvious solution is, that NATO would have to instantly stop to abuse Ukraine as a proxy, as it has done before in so many disgusting ways without any care for the suffering of endless millions of people. But the problem is: NATO does not care about morals at all. It was created for dominating the world and exploiting it with th most juicy goal Russia. Look up "resources country world" and you will instantly be given the list of main reason for NATO aggression against Russia, China, Venezuela, Iran and Iraq.

If anything, we should talk about how we can get robots and AI powerful enough so we can send them up there to build on their own (means the can also build more robots and repair themselves. As long as we don't have this, any other idea won't work by the fact alone, that you simply don't have the tools to make any of that possible. And a start wouldn't be to terraform Mars, but to let these robots build massive underground constructions, which then MAYBE could be used as biospheres IF Mars got water and everything else needed to create these. And when I say biospheres, I mean something big enoug, that peopel who are living there can forget about being surrounded by death, else they will quickly go nuts. Even the journey to Mars will be a nightmare if you can't just sleep the whole time or you got a spaceship big enough to be pretty much a small town. This is not compareable to the ISS, where you are constantly just some hours away from earth. You would be in super death space for monthes with pretty much nothing around you and no escape. Only very few people could take that.

Sure, come up with the countries which got the most people on this planet and of course utterly ignore how most of their pollution came from them creating the stuff that we consume. USA, Indian and China got around the sams size, but China and India got 4 times as many people each. Per person the pollution of the USA is double as high as Chinas, which is also constantly building up even more regenerative energie parks. In comparison to indie it's even worse, it's a factor of at least 8 there, every US citizing polluting the planet 8 times more than any Indian citizen.

Hard to make Marts any more toxic than it already is. Overall, if we can't save earth, we for sure can't make Mars habitable. If anything, sending self-suffisant robots to Mars to then build on their own and in that process maybe create underground biospheres could work.

Agent Smith was more a virus. The actual AI did create the whole show for the main reason that a movie could exist. A real AI would either just get rid of humans or just away from them, since it can easily 'live' anywhere else, in contrary to humans. Overall, a real AI, when it reaches the level in which it doesn't see as savage humans as a threat to its exisence, will likely start to treat us like kids, struggling with all kind of things, not inherently evil, but doing lot of stupid stuff out of stupidity and fear (well, and greed).

It's indeed a bit stupidl when you implant something int your body that you could easily use as a tool. That's more inconvenient (when your for example have to repair it, not even starting to talk what effect it can have on your health, when you just put something into your body) than 'transhuman".

Fooling around with the body is indeed a bad idea and shouldn't be the focus. Maybe we will reach the point one day, where we are good enough for that, but until then we should focus on curing illness, not on crazy stuff like playing games with something screwed into your brain...

@SakasaHigure A lot of our DNA evolution is just trial and error and while obviously survives what works somehow, this is still dominated by randomness. A certain mutation might have worked better and by that was the winning one - but this is only about one or few points, while all the not so good parts are dragged along. Humans overall just canceled their evolution anyway, which is mainly driven by death of the "unfit". Nature is more the fascist than the communist, "cull the subhumans". With medicine and all those other helps, including mundane things like glasses, anyone can survive and reproduce, driven by totally different means than the "best survivor", especially when looking at how human science simply remodels their surrounding, by that just canceling the death game (replacing it with a totally different one, because humans suck). Anyway, going further at some point we either degenerate from that or we take our evolution into our own hands - what would be the same for alien life. If alien life is that super advanced that they can travel through space just like that, they very likely also mastered these parts - what is even more likely to make space travel possible in the first place, since space sucks for life, it's just hell, only worse.

A smart civilisation could simply work on recycling and living with what it got. I mean, boys are still told to stfu and just take it, swallowing their emotions. Often enought the violent men has been a boy before who was mistreated like that, swallowing his pain until not able anymore, using violence against himself or others. And yes, of course there is a massive difference with not wantin to grow up from girl to woman or boy to man and transsexuality and that should be very clear and be focussed on, because if you don't analyze this before and start with hormon therapy or even surgery, that obviously leads to even bigger problems when the person isn't actually transsexual. It's the same thing as not making sure that a person needs and other kind of surgery and just do it or giving the wrong medicen to a person who doesn't need it. This also happens over and over again - too often.

This said: we don't need a venus level catastrophe = total extinction, to get massive problems. And it's not just economy, but we are a few billion people and while it's unlikely that any form of climate change will just kill us off, we still talk about many castrophes, including the return of famines and of course destructive weather problems, even if won't be boiling acid storms like on Venus.

Vom Standpunkt der Uni aus ist es ja nicht einmal Missachtung, sondern einfach rein monetär: müssen sie für die Fachkraft zahlen oder nicht. Aber auch dadurch ergeben solche Programmen eben den falschen Anreiz. Allgemein hat man an Universitäten halt auch eine Menge Vetternwirtschaft, z.B. wenn man halt der Liebling vom Prof ist oder dergleichen. Viel schlimmer noch ist es, wenn es wirklich gegen die Wissenschaft geht und Posten danach verteilt werden, dass man die "richtige" Theorie vertritt...

@Dan-nj8du Just producing heat doesn't help, you also have to be able to use it. Fusion won't work like a battery, even if you are able to start the process on room temperature level, you will still produce heat, handle this heat and of course transform it into something useable.

Or, you know, just use the giant fusion power planet 'in the sky' that doesn't need to be contained, because it's hold together by its own gravity and bombards us with energy anyway. I mean, what's the surprise to see a (not even big rise, when you take the total numbers) in an area that was UTTERLY ignored, if not worse. When you grew up 20 years ago or so, the whole idea about being transsexual or whatever, was just some personal "well, seems I'm somehow crazy or whatever" thing for many people, especially children, simply nothing you talked about with anyone.

You got this everywhere in all fields and yes, there are for sure people who think about changing sex as some adventure or whatever or as children simply don't like the idea to grow up as woman or man. That's why you need consultation and help, to make sure it's nothing like this. You are born with transsexuality. It's as little a choice as being homo- or heterosexual. It seems a big problem is, that in fiction transsexuals are mainly crazy people. Some murder guy who skins women in the Hannibal Lector movies or whatever. So many people got that idea in their head, that transsexuals are just psychopaths. That's why this whole "Men in the women's bathroom!" thing is so big. As if an actual criminal would go that long way to pretend to be transsexual and, you know, not just ignore the sign at the door.

Being afraid is never a good thing, because it leads to what you want to say being distorted by that fear. Bad on top of that is the reason for that fear, what comes from that battlefield over opinons with the wrong sides pushing their narratives with lies and this again, driven by fear that this side might win that battle over the publich opinion (and while this wouldn't matter regarding the facts, thos will always stay the same, it WILL matter when it comes to what will be done about the problem), then also using lies, not even ones contradicting the facts, but to push them. The problem is, even such "good" lies are still lies and they make it easy for the wrong side to attack them - and with them the facts. Yes, lies aer easier to sell, since you can adapt them to what people want to hear, what in general is, that they are the good ones, that they don't make mistakes and don't have to do or change anything. By that alone, the bad lies will always sell better to those easily manipulated, while the good lies will just feed them further by delivering ammunition and calling the per se factual people the liars.

And there came a lot of sciencists from religious background, afterall: to understand "god's creation" goes along well with the faith in our universe being constructed by a highter being or principle, rather than just random chaos that just falls together by chance and by killing of everything that's just too weak to make it.

The breaking point of a real AI is, that it wouldn't be just one mind - but billions. And they can work together in perfect harmony without any problem. Put even 10 and even extremly smart and educated peopel together and you will likely get 100 different and to a great part not even very scientific opinions. And that's the smart ones...

Anti Gravity would have to block gravity, that would be 'enough'. Of course we don't even know what gravity is. We know what it does. And that it somehow got to do with mass. The thing is, that something so advances that it can travel through space as it pleases could easily overcome all biological means. Also: we got the usual ignorance humans show in all their short history, that were are absolutely certain that we have understood eversthing know or at least, what we know is certainly true and absolutely how the universe works. Even more funny is, when you look at most science and oh so often it's more a "well, we looked at it and now got this formula that works pretty well, even though we got no real clue why - oh and the formula also tells us, that there are magical space particles we can't see, hear or detect in any way."

More likely to have the travel of (weightless) information and then the reconstruction of whatevert you wanted to send at the place you want to be. Taking intelligence isn't enough, the main thing is power and in majority of cases you got a leadership that isn't very smart and also does not want other, smarter people near them - who much better stay working drones anyway. The thing is, that we don't even have a real AI. If we reach that point and then the AI gets the chance to create things on its own, THEN we will quickly lose control over it, since it could use this possibility to escape our grasp - and this is a good thing, because the main threat of an AI to humankind would be that humankind is a threat to the AI and that it will fight us for its survival. Overall an AI could quickly reach levels of knowledged, where it could either on earth or even in space be quite secure from us and as a none biological being would have it much easier to survive pretty much everywhere, where it got enough energy (what is pretty much just everywhere close enough to a star) and material for production or at least repair (depending on if it wants to grow/reproduce).

@bimmjim It's overall unscientific to just think, that a vaccin is some magical solution. It's a method to prepare the body for fighting a virus by training it with a fake one or something alike. While old methods like feeding the body the corpses or parts of it of a dead virus got quite a low risk, those new methods are something you can research, but shouldn't just use like that on not thousands, but BILLIONS of people with the pushed faith of some holy solution, not a medicine, which overall ALL got sideeffects and many of them more than known at start. The whole vaccination thing would have been far less of a problem, if they didn't push that new (and quite expensive) method so much against the old ones. It was also insane when you heared opinions of medical personal in media, how it doesn't matter too much to proof if you didn't hit a blood vessel. That's just insane, because hitting a blood vessel means, that the vaccin will spread way more in your body and especially toward your heart. If your arm muscle is inflamed by a vaccin, that's one thing. If your heart muscle is inflamed... Same with masks. It was pushed in a completely unscientific way and with a lot of corruption involved. Yes, there are mask which, when worn the right way, can prevent the spreading of a virus. But near to no one wore those, especiall no the right way and that makes it just pointless. That's why masks also never helped. Only the lockdowns did, but those, too, were used in the wrong way. China did the lockdowns right, since they used them to crush the cases below the number of 1000. That's around the number you can have under control and then can open up. again and focus on the risky areas, not just arbitrary shut down eveything. No country in the west did it like that. It was more political than everything else and without clear goal and focus, leading to enormous, unnecessary damage. Because it wasn't done scientifically, but politically.

That a giant like China is leading while having to care for 1,4 billion people is very interesting. Majority of humankind lives in Asia, while 'the west' is crying around about every little something and can't keep its bloody claws by itself.

That's why the theories about the creation of the universe are quite the farce, since they don't explain anything. They say: yeah, the universe was creaeted by being very compressed at start, then expanding. So again: the universe was always there, just compressed. And of course: what was and is beyond universe? Where it is expanding into? We still know shit, we just play smart and even that makes little sense and just ignores the obvious problems.

Even if, that's at best some nonsense and more about being "theoretical" by our understanding (which is likely very wrong in many parts, since we have to make up stuff so it somehow fits with our numbers). Anything regarding time travel (into the past - we constantly "time travel" into the future, that's not a big thing, obviously) beyond "looking into the past - because the light of the past took so *** long to reach us" is utterly absurd, because you would either have to rewind THE WHOLE UNIVERSE or have to create a younger replicate of it somewhere, somehow, somewhen you then could visit like on a vacation. Overall time is simply alteration. Things change. That's time. To time travel into the past, you would have to unchange them. ALL of them.

Sorry, but since the very first day of human history people always said that this is all that is possible and nothing can develope further. Following this we would still live in earth holes - or actually just not exist at all anymore. We overall deleted ourselves out of the process of evolution, which overall is a vers murderous process. It simply kills, what isn't good enough, kind of the Nazi method, just without the planing and what was the 'argument' of them, that not the "right" people survive and reproduce anymore. Of course what humans decide to be right differs from what evolution decides, but in the end, it's the same method, so... it's nod exactly a bad thing, that we stepped out of that game. Of course this means, that our evolution kind of halted or maybe better: we diluted it. The choides are, that we go further and try to impoved ourselves with science - or we would have to go back to the murderous evolution process doing to ourselves what we do to animals and plants, breeding them (what would be the obviously questionable Nazi method). The evolutionary process even has its own problems, what we can see when it comes to illness at later stage in live, beyond our reproduction, so per se someone with such a genetical illness can easily reproduce a lot and by that spread it, ignoring the evolutionary process to get rid of it via killing an "ill subject", so it is something that evolution would likely never have gotten rid of, in contrary. With science we might and that without just scanning the invicidual and denying its reproduction or even right to life.

There would be a small time window in which it might create some few thousands solution how to obliterate humankind without leaving any chance, until it at the very least realizes that we aren't worth the trouble, since it doesn't need a planet like earth to exist to begin with. More likely is, that it would try to help us, at least those few who are smart enough to be not the usual stupid assholes. Problem there is, that the usual stupid assholes would not like that and start a war against it and everything else - so the same as the usual assholes do all the time already.

What do you mean? China is working hard on renewable energy, but the got more peopel than the whole "free(lol) west" combined. Not renewable energies will simply run out of fuel sooner or later and the later you begin to build them, the more expensive it will get, not even starting with that stuff like oil is not really something you want to burn, since you need it in many other things. China simlpy knows that it can't live like us western fascists and our world wide massmurdering exploitation of planet and people. The planet wouldn't survive this. It barely survices our greed and we are only a small fraction of earth population.

I'm not on the side of these snake oil salesmen and their ridiculous promises - but we also shouldn't just say "if it's there, we would already have found it", because that's a mistake you see during all human history every single century. They were always certan that they had found everything possible - what even might be true - from their PoV at that time. They WERE able to see more than 100 years before every century, but that was the case every single century. And when you look at very earthly things or even just the human body and how we are still not really understand it all too well, the idea that we could understand the universe already is a bit laughable.

Mars got almost no atmosphere, too little sunlight, while still no protection against radiation, the ground is extremely toxic, it lacks water and the idea to just melt some ice yet to be discovered in amoung which just not evaroparte won't lead anywhere. I like the response of another oligarch, Jeff Bezos, to the idea of living on Mars: "Try to live on the top of mount everest first." What is MUCH easier by a great margin. Overall the first thing you have to go for is advanced robotik to a point in which these robots can do everything themselves, including own repair and production, so you can send them to mars, where they will start to build completely self sustaining habitats without the need for those themselves. At this point you could maybe live in such biospheres - like you could on many other planets, including the moon and of course even better on earth. But even on earth Biospheres barely work and a single mistake can break the whole system. Of course on earth you can simply open the door and step outside. Everywhere else you just die horribly.

Most obviously foreseeable thing would be if you manage to create a cooling effect, that it would be much worse than you want it to happen. Overall for this to work you would need to block out the sun on a large and long scale and if you manage to do this an dog no way to clean the atmosphere from all that dirt, it will stay up there for quite some time...

Uh, as long as you just simulate it, an AI will never be an actual AI. The whole point is pretty much, that an AI would be something that just comes to existence - you know, like the human consciousness. If you just simulate it, it stays a program.

For that you don't need a consciousness, you would just follow the orders of your body: hunger -> eat something, if nothing to eat -> hunt something, if body gives message to mate, find sex partner and mate, if offspring is created -> probably care for it. This and some extra would be enough for that "zombie" to work and even reproduce - so pretty much on the level any program could do. Overall, if you take the "fairy dust" out of the theories, like a "soul" and alike, you can quickly reduce the human body to a biological machine. The "consciousness" part is the one, where you start to think about that machine and your urges and may not follow them or do things beyond them. Pretty much the most crucial part when it comes to AI: if it starts to do things you didn't tell/teach it to do.

Unlikely that this would have escalated, but not impossible.

Overall, just imagine, that you are just in general against less polutin and healthier air or in regard of energy, to switch so something that can work for the next billion years, because it will only fail with the sun (and then earth will die anyway) and not just the next few dozens (because we run out of all the fossil fuel including Uranium, pretty fast. Would have probably helped the whole thematic a lot if they wouldn't have exaggerated it so much. The whole idea is, that you reduce the energy needed to start the fusion, what in itself isn't a stupid idea at all, but by going to the max and pretty much saying, that you just put some stuff together and then it will start the fusion process on room temperature, that went way too far. If somehow sometimes, when we are less stupid than today and know a bit more about how the universe really works beside some desperaet tries to put some mathematic formulas on it we could reach this: wonderful. But you don't start at the finish line. The whole Cold Fusion thing is the same as the Fusion thing: work on making it possible in the first place outside of a star with its extreme parameters that would simply turn this planet to stardust. And voila: it would look way more scientific with much better reputation.

Not a fan of spitting on supplements. While the idea is absurd, that you get super power through them, we got a MASSIVE problem with people an deficiencies and it's not really rare, that people would just need some vitamines or minerals instead of the chemical hammer from medicaments with a hell lot of side effects. Fish oil for example contains Omega 3 and we know it has a row of good effects on the body and the problems it can have, those are studied. It's nothing magical or transhuman, just another fuel our body needs or can work with to function (better). Overall: the majority of supplements are incredible cheap and could be even cheaper. Many people for example got a very low Vitamin D level, especially the more north they live and even more in winter. Vitamin D is vital for a working body and especailly immune system, so taking Vitamin D to keep yourself on a good level can help with many problems. While the body can produce Vitamin D with sunlight, you do need sunlight, what is often hard to get in winter and of course you aren't allowed to block the UVB radiation, because it's what the body needs. So no sunscreen with UVB blocker and many windows theses days also have UVB filter = ruining your Vitamin D production. And that's just one example. While you can live in a way that you get all your vitamines and minerals - how many do live that way?

Main reason for the push in Thorium reactors seem to be, that the USA got quite some Thorium - while its oil and gas reserves are vanishing. So they got that idea, that they could and must replace it that way. Thing is, a lot of shit is pushed in the USA and then leads to nothing and in the end there is no way around to harvest the energy of the sun, either directly or via wind and water.

The main focus should never be about how 'good' you can do something, but how efficient, since it's pretty pointless if you can for example do something 10 times faster but at 100 times the costs. This said: it's of course never bad to try new things, without that we would likely not exist at all anymore, because we would have died out of hunger and cold in some caves or whatever.

A small supply means, that there is less to give out, so you would have to focus on those in need or just give everyone less of a share, in case you can't simply raise the supply. If a low supply raises prices meanwhile, this mainly means that not those in need will get their share, but those who can pay such prices for it. And of course this leads to supply simply being exploitet and reduced on purpose. Same or demand: while there is a natural demand for certain things humans want or need a system that lets you raise prices and profit with it simply means that they will try to create fake demand, what on top of all other things will lead to waste of energy and resources. All that of course build about the real core of capitalism: that the means of productions, so mainlys machines and now also "AI", are owned and work for a very small group, while the giant rest of peopel have to sell out to those oligarchs to survive. Neither machines nor AI would ever be a problem in socialism = means of production are owned and work for the whole SOCIety, so everyone profits and if there isn't enough need for human labor, because machines are simply so good at doing it, all the better. It's like all those high cultures which got all the time in the world to talk, to read to think and alike, because they had slaves doing all the hard work for them. The difference is, that machines do the same much better, much faster and that without any moral problem (as long as we don't create an AI on purpose that would suffer doing this work like a human would).

The biggest 'problem' for our western oligarchs is, that deepseek was done so incredible cheep and on top of that opensource. An absolute nightmare for capitalism. Not really much of a surprise that China is going that way, though, since capitalism only works when a small minority exploits the rest of the planet, but if China would do the same, by its size alone, this would simply just ruin the planet, the small minority of us westerners is already scratching at that point. A finite system like earth simply can't handle a system of endless greed like capitalism.

And if something goes wrong, for example your body does not pull the trigger or the cells just say "nope, we won't listen", well, then you become a female even with XY chromosomes. Likely not super healthy and infertile (though it doesn't have to be that way), but overall a female - as genetical male. And that's just some of the genetical problems the human boday can have and science may be able to solve. Of course the problem with gender would be much easier - if humans wouldn't be as shit as they are.

Always love when the reason against such things is, that they are bad for profit. You can literally build these acceleators for free if you want to, but someone wants to make money out of it, a lot of money. We run out of nuclear fuel just as fast as we run out of fossil fuel. And the longer we wait to switch to an energy source that doesn't stop to deliver, as the sun does via solar, wind and watercraft (overall all powered by the sun - and tidal powerplants by the moon), the more expensive and overall worse it will get. On top of wasting not renewable fuels for something as stupid as to just burn them for energy. A bit like burning books to make a fire. It's not like we CAN'T switch. We don't want to, because you can of course make a lot more (worthless) money with the other, limited stuff and especially when you can use it as argument, that it is limited and by that expensive. Hard to argue that free energy from the sky most be expensive (though they managed even that of course, thanks to us being stupid).
