  1. Obviously understanding it is not necessary, else human intelligence wouldn't be a thing. And it's easy to argue that we are not much more than a biological machine with a biological computer inside our head to run it.

  2. Sorry, but since the very first day of human history people always said that this is all that is possible and nothing can develope further. Following this we would still live in earth holes - or actually just not exist at all anymore. The idea that AI couldn't get further is the same as if humans coudn't exist, because guess what: we started as mere bacteria able to do shit.
