Russia knows exactly that NATO is behind the whole coup and pushin the Nazis to slaughtering and displacing the people in the east and would also push them toward attacking Crimea. The whole "Ukraine not into NATO", was a diplomatic way to say, that they gonna stop that and NATO made clear "oh no, we won't, we will get the war we want." That of course left Russia no choice. They could have waited until the Donbass gets slaughtered by the NATO armed Nazis, but if those would have attacked Crimea, they couldn't have hold back anymore and see that as clear declaration of war. And that would have been true war, no SMO anymore. Russia would have obliterated Kiev for that. They would have had to.
