  3. Problem with mixing veterans with newbis in such an extrem scenario is, that the veterans will not likely make the newbies stronger, but the newbies drag the veterans down. A chain is as tough as its weakest link, as it is said. A single mistake of a single soldiers can easily have devastating consequences for the whole group. Not against mix up, but you can't send them into hell. You need to put them in action behind the frontline, so they got time to grow and learn. There is no time for that in Bakhmut and alike.

It's a MASSIVE difference if you got a solidly working army and fill certain gaps with volunteers - or to be with nothing left but newbies you force or lure to go there as your main fighting force with maybe some veterans here and there. You also can't just train new people in a few weeks to forge a working, modern army out of them, even if you could give them the equipment (what they can't in the needed numbers, Zelensky's list is a joke and simply wants NATO to join in with pretty much all available land forces regarding equiment). Modern warfare is horrendous for humans. You can near to never see the enemy, even when it comes to the shorter range, 'direct contact' combat zone with rifles, not even talking about all the warfare around artillery, rockets, drones and so on. The hopeless insanity was clear, when the very first thing Zelensky ordered was, that just everyone should put up a rifle and make molotov cocktails. What an insane order, giving flashbacks to Hitler's "Volkssturm" in the last months of his regime. Started also with the order to just force everyone male from 16-60 who wasn't fighting yet, into the Wehrmacht. And in the end it's not the incompetence and so on that is devastating. Chaos, friendly fire (which is even still a danger in professional armies) and of course the fact, that you won't exactly get the smartest and most holding back people with such orders, will cause much more random damage and death than 'good', even for the planed cause. Hitler's Volkssturm for exampl was a disaster. Training and equipment was awful, they were barely more than cannonfodder, but instead committed various atrocities and warcrimes, because especially the most fanatic of course fought till the very end and all led by the SS, shooting the 'traitors' who would not follow along. Untrained, underequipped (still deadly armed) quasi civilians, driven by propaganda and fear - what could go wrong.

  10. They also got the problem, that they destroy their own bridges and of course this makes its pretty hard to withdraw with heavy equipment like a self-propelled howitzer. The only 'news' I saw about these french things were Ukraine shooting at civil sectors and hospitals with it - likely because those can't fire back, but in the end, this does not save them. NATO is used to fight enemies which can't fight back and so all those "wonderweapons" are just about that: they are good for slaughtering defenseless victims.

  11. I really would like to know, what they tell these guys or do to them, that they don't just surrender. This is not like SU vs Nazi army, where it was clear, that the Nazis were there to commit a complete genocide. This whole war is mainly about NATO interests for Russian (and Ukrainian) resources and you could maybe argue, that the soldiers could think about keeping Ukraine as it was. But how stupid is that idea? They do not just fight the Russian army. Those eight years they fought all those Ukrainians and that's still the case. Russia is the big brother who came to help and is life saving important of course, but overall it should still be clear, that a big majority of the people in East Ukraina DON'T WANT TO be part of Ukraine anymore, which had tried to murder or deport them for the last eight years. What exactly are these people dying for?

It's breaking the Guineva Concentions to a) use civilian vehicles for such attacks and b) abuse (on top of that unknowing) civilians for that. The humiliation is on the side of the terror regime, which break all rules of law, what will cost them dearly and reached borderline nothing with it. Russia does not really care go lose some old soviet time air-trucks. It's way more pissed about HOW this attacked happened, that treaties were abused for that and of course a hell lot about that train attack, yes.

Heard stories from WW2 veterans from the insanities of the war, for example an injured officer, who got a bulled in the head, it didn't kill him, yet, but he couldn't move anymore and instead yelled all the time, half insane and in pain. Another story from a soldier was, how the were shot by the Russians and a comrade close to him just 'exploded' and vanished, hit by an anti air cannon used against infantery. He was obviously one of the survivors and they managed to kill the people at that anti air cannon: it had been women. And yes, that's not a 'girl power' story, that's the story of people fighting for their existence and millions dying for it. It's not girl power, it's insanity. War is insanity.

IMO - and overall without knowledge of details it will always be a guessing game, even moer because the core point of tactic and strategy is to not be easily to see through (which means, that the Russians likely have several layers of how the can act and react) - Russia used those up to 500.000 addtionals forces to make a fortress out of the Donbass and southern region and from there takes its time to grind down anything in front of it. It's the most obvious thing to see and because it looks so small and little makes certain people guess, that Russia just can't do more. Of course the majority of power if still just resting there and the worst thing you could do is to try to storm that fortress. Russia got no reason to risk anything. It could sure push forward, but this would raise the cost in equipment and lives for no additional gain.

It was a terror-warcrime tactic (not only abusing civilian vehicles but also unknowing civilian drivers) that only succeeded against airfields which got nothing to do with the conflict. Overall a complete failure, especially with only some old soviet time bombers getting damaged. Russi built hundreds of these and only uses a few dozens, because they overall do not really have much need for these. Those flying trucks are way too old, too big and too slow to be useful in any conflict beside firing cruise missiles and Russia cruise missiles can be fired by pretty much everything, including land units and ships.

You can still work with it when it comes to actually claim territory, where you have to go in and then got the problem, that the defender will likely have fortified positions, prepared and all, while you have to take new ground and secure it and so on. But when you just shell the shit out of area, manpower means very little. In contrary: the more manpower you got, the more likely big losses are. There was the interview with an UK mercenary (pro coup regime) and he for example told abou, how not far from them a quite crowded military camp of Ukraine was hit by ToS-1. Yeah, those guys are just dead. He was also there in the beginnning days when the military camps at the western border of Ukraine were wiped out. They were just lucky, nothing else. Other troop buildings were just blown up with everyone inside and of course even whit some of their people, while they were able to flee, still were injured or even killed by debri. He also talked about the brutal corruption (as said, he's pro coup regime), how a whole truck with a hell lot of US weapons and full to the top with ammuntion just got lost. At the front, with control stations every few km, so it's clearly corruption.

  31. @Ryk At start, yes (also it's not Russia alone, Ukraine is fighting Ukraine since 2014, people forget that this all started as civil war, or better as the try to genocide the whole east and south because it would not follow the coup, and Ukraine even got stuck against those people, though with support of NATO they would have been able to finish it when they started the brutal bombarding again in Feb 2022 - but the Russia intervened). Meanwhile so many died for nothing, that you don't really have much actual soldiers left. A lot of freshly send cannonfodder, but those just die even faster and for even less than nothing.

  33. I got no problem at all with female character in such setting and all kind of other stories. The big problem is, that they are often terribly written. The main point about male characters is: their sex plays close to no role at all. They are that person. Female characters are often just that: female. And as if to compensate for that, they tend to be way over the top. Even worse when all male characters are made worse, just dumb, brutal and so on, so that female can shine more. There WERE women fighting, but it wasn't girl power. Just as all male soldiers got nothing to do with 'boy power'. Soldiers are lambs for the slaughter. There is nothing heroic about war. Men are told to die in wars for their women and children. If we would value the lives of men as much as the lives of women, war would simply be almost impossible. When I see war stories with female characters and then people think that is 'girl power', it just disgusts me. That's war propaganda. War stories shouldn't be about glorious victories. There is no glory in no war. Never. And evn heroism is just a nicer word for sacrifice. A sacrifice that shouldn't be needed in the first place.

  38. What is by the way stupid. You may have important positions worth to hold, but in general falling back is always the best decision. That's how you build up your lines in the first place, that your front line CAN fall back, while the lines behind those hammer the attacker. This by the way does not mean, that it must happen at the same time. Warfare is deception. You don't just have one easy tactic and follow it, you mixture it, let the enemy come on purpose for example, make them feel save and victorious, so they get cocky and bring in more, then you destroy all of it in one big attack - just as one example.

Something like this can work in a completely different scenario, for example an actual stalemate with both sides struggeling, in that case a distractiojn like that can have success. What people don't get, when they take just the numbers, is, that you have to divide it through the numbers of countries and substract a hell lot of base costs and so on from it. None of the NATO countries would nor could just send everything and you have to substract that for every single country. Why do you think NATO is struggeling so much now? Germany military is already crying about those 14(!) tanks, that they have to take those from units they actually need for training and alike.

The idea of staggering comes from the utterly absurd assumption, that reality is like some stupid Hollywood movie or anime, in which your got your invincible Mary Sue protagonists who just survives everything no matter what.   68. Those falling cities are just a side effect of the collapse. It's not videogame, where you just produce more units from some magical income you get. Dead soldiers are dead, the one replacing them won't have the same experience and skill, what has a giant, negative impact on all your units and the military itself. NATO can pump in old or new stuff they got, but this also got limits,, and no, they can only send a small fraction, not only because logistics, but also the need to keep their own army intact. This is especially a thing with the US military, which can't just pillage all their hundreds of army bases world wide and their homeland, to waste it in Ukraine and if they push so far, that this would be the case, it's not just Russia, that will increase its own efforts (and it can, a lot...), this will also wake China, because if NATO starts to go 3.WW route, this won't be against Russia alone, even if it would like to have that. So overall, there isn't much left. NATO can send in more peanuts, which won't even compensate for what Ukraine already lost and when it's low range systems - those are fishes in a barrell for Russia drones, artillery, missiles and airforce and that more and more. NATO warfare only works when you got a gigantic air campaign before that. That's what it is used to. But there is no chance for that on Ukraine's side without going 3.WW.

On top of that, you can't just repeat something like that over and over - but you would have to. To win a war, you would need this 100s and 1000s of times. This isn't a success. You need a lot of TNT and place it at the right poinst to bring them down. You just don't take territory for the lols, especially because on its own its an disadvantage to begin with, a liability. You have to defend it, means you spread out your forces, which don't just magically multiply, like in a vidogame, where you just build another troop station or whatever. Especially new territory won't fortified and if further away will stretch your logicistics, too. When the territory isn't important, there is also noch much reason to spend all too much resources into forticating it or weakening other parts of your front by sending troops and especially haevy weponry from there to that pointless territory. Warfare is about destroying the enemy's army and in best case without any own losses (that would be the absolute optimum that of course can't be reached). Maximized enemy losses, minimize your own. Territory is what you take as you please when you have won the war. An enemy with no army left has to give you everything you want.

Their problem is: a) After the coup a good third of the people did not really like that coup at all - this includes the people who had chosen to be soldier. b) When the coup regime ordered the military to just stomp out any resistence by force, even more soldiers were against it, regime change was one thing but military violence against those who thought otherwise? A no go. This not only lead to massive loses in the Ukrainian army (including officers) by desertion, many of those started to FIGHT for the people they were ordered to get rid off. Even those who did not switch were not really in high moral and overall the image of the Ukrainian army suffered so much, that many young peopel who should join the army simply did not show up. Their replacement? Extremists. Peopel who were so brutally nationalist, racist and even fascistic, that they had no problem with following orders for murder. Problem (beside the obvious): those people were not really the best soldiers. That's why the coup regime Ukraine was not able to conquer the Donbass in all these years beside a big equipment advantage. They ran so often into cauldron traps (an as stupid as pretty much worst mistake you can make, there is near to no situation that is worse than getting trapped into a cauldron) since 2014 - and they never learned anything from it. Pretty much only reason for this can be: they got a terrible and likely often switching leadership. Meanwhile it seems that Ukrainian army mainly get political orders and have to follow thos, no matter how stupid and suicidal. An offense alone got not worth if you are unable tho hold what you conquer. It's one of the reason why Russia is taking their time. They go no prob with the suicidal 'counter offensives' of Ukraine, in contrary.

You have to be aware about Russia's surveillance and then try to use this to create deception by fake manveuvres and whatever. On the other side, Ukraine doesn't have that level of surveillance and on top of that: Russia isn't focussing on one point at all. From this position, it can push focus on Bakhmut via Wagner, since overall: if Ukraine looks around for a weak point, it won't find one, so it is doomed to follow the pressure of Russia which cojmes in the form of Wagner while the heavily Russian Great Wall towers behind those. Of course for a deep analysis there has to be known more details than that. Overall it is indeed quite clear, that Wagner either drags attention to them for marketing purpose (what would be... questionable...) or as part of the overal strategy. It's absurd, how there is little talk about the Russian army, the clear main protagonist. Even if you would get rid of Wagner all together, that wouldn't change much. They are a strong strike unit, but they are not the army.

The more high tech the system is, the more you need a complex support for that system and if you don't have set, well, you have to work around somehow, what even if possible makes it awful. No one says Ukrainians are idiots, it's not like NATO armies are run by super smart people. But it's a complete unusual system for them and that mainly on its own, not as part of the whole military system which would actually be needed to make it work well. Also: many veteran soldiers in Ukraine left, gave up or died, so you got a hell lot of rookies and for those it's just completely overwhelming. And even if you got training, that just training. US military guys explained quite well, how you get into an experience team as a trained rookie and then learn further - not BE the guy who then shall train others with no clue at all. It's insane enough to just give people rifles and some trainin and send them in, but overall a rifle is a quite simply thing.

  142. That's not new, the whole point of tank is to draw fire and survive it as long a possible. Their firing range is garbage since many, many years, they got no anti air and they are not good for transporting troops, plus are pretty slow. They mainly got a lot of armor and of course we mainly see the succeful hits. But in general, tanks lost a lot of meaning and that since decades. There isn't really anything they are the stone vs the scissor, even infantery can destroy them with high range anti tank weponry. As soon as you don't fight some goat herders who barely got more than an RPG here and there, it's clearly not what you should focus on if you want to succeed. They got their part as support, as said, to draw attention and fire and soak up as much as possible before they are disabled. But that's pretty much it.

If they would have control over the Black Sea, you could start to think about it, but as things are, if they push south in what way ever, it's not only that there is a very narrow entrance to Crimea itself, what alone makes it a natural and of course heavily armed fortress - they got Russia all the time in their back. What giant armies shall hold the flanks to the east? Not even starting to talk what the Russian navy will do with you - and the air force. Oh, sure, you could bring your missile artillery there, for example to attack the crimean bridge, what overall would not hinder the army much, it would be way more annoying for the civilians. But if you get that close, you have to scratch the frontline with them and than the chance to survive shrinks from ~80% (thanks to firing at the frontline from max range) to <5%. Crimea itself is around as big as Belgium. That's not just something you just take SImferopol and Sewastopol alone are two major cities both with over 300.000 citizens. And that's just some marker and every single one of those point out how insane the idea is, to reach any of them with 50.000 soldiers (not even starting to talk, that Russia still got a ~500.000 army going in Ukraine alone PLUS the soldiers on Crimea, which are not even part of that).

In reality, you see shit, you know shit, 99+% of the shots miss the target (and hit something else) and even when you got a firefight, you will barely see whom you are actually shooting at, not even talking about artillery and so on. When you hear the western media and co talk about the magical artillery units we send them for example: well, fine when you can shoot so far (and what they got - and was destroyed - could do that, too), but withotu surveillance, this doens't help you much. From journalists at the frontline came the info, that they simply can't look the far and drones get jamed and so on. Satellite images are mainly good for stationary targets, stuff that can't move, like buildings. So what we got (well, not from our MSM) are shots of our wonderful western wonder weapons against villages, schools, hospitals and alike, no soldiers even near it, but, well, they know those buildings are there, those can't move away, they don't know who's inside, so they just shoot at them. Same for the great idea to just open prisons and in general just give military weapons to anyone who wants them. What persons will take such an offer? The smart ones? The thoughtful ones? Or the ones who are aggressive, dumb or think it's all a videogame? They sit there with others like them, their new weapons with overall not enough ammuntion to reach anything at all beside being a lethal risk, and, well, no enemy in 50km radius. But they don't know that. They were told, there are enemies everywhere. Saboteurs. People in civil (like them). Danegerous, likely armed people (like them). I don't want to know, how many people died from that alone. Friendly fire is a big problem even in trained armies, it's still a big danger. When you just arm civilians (and criminals), it's not only a risk anymore, it's the main threat. It's something you rarely got in video games.

  169. Don't think that Ukraine really destroyed some big ammuntion depot. 1) This explosion does not look like one. Yes, it's big, but if you look at known explosions of ammuntion depots, you got a lot of secondary explosions there and there is many other stuff that can cause massive explosions, for example fertilizer (the massive detonation in Beirut was fueled by fertilizer, just for people to know, how brutal that can be). 2) The idea, that Russia would have such big ammuntion depots right at the front line is pretty absurd. Ukraine got for example Tochka-U, I don't know which version and by that range they got, but even the one with the smallest range is on par with the HIMARS MLRS missiles and that story about destroyed ammuntion depot was at a time before those 300km HIMARS rockets (which by the way are likely easier to intercept than the small ones - and the whole GPS story is a problem anyway).

Russia does and when you have to get 5km close for a shot, it does not matter much if you got soldiers with manpads running around, those don't have the range to protect your tank from attack helicopters and other airforce. Surveillance is also incredible important and some satelite imamages of NATO won't help you much during a direct confrontation. Russian ECM and anti air clears the sky of Ukrainian drones, while they got theirs all the time in the ear. Means those precious Battle Tanks are detected and marked very fast. As soldier you can hide somewhere, but there aren't so many places where you can hide a tank.

A weak link would be a prisoner with no skills and/or no loyality. What you got there is at best some light scout units, which "don't break", but simply aren't as insane a the Ukrup Nazis, to fight over that position. They fall back and let the other lines do their work. This isn't a fight with swords, spears and bows. The main offensive weapons is artillerys and you keep artillery many km away from that line on the map for obvious reasons. Russia got no reason to hold that hill. They may have a big longer range, but are way more easy to interecept, because slower and of course you can mess with the drones. 50k artillery shells delivered via drone, well, 50k are shot every single day. And those drones can't be guided, it would be extremely easy to counter that with ECM if they need any signal and you don't need to target them, that's an area effect. They can just make them all crash.
