  1. One side got a partial mobilisation after starting with around 150k soldiers. The other side after starting with 3-4 times that much had full mobilisation and meanwhile over 10 conscription rounds, starting to drag people from the street, out of their homes and even goes o funerals to catch men, while demanding that Europe shall send those who fled back to fight. Obviously the first one must have the horrendous losses, while the second one far less. And no, being on the defense doesn't automatically lead to fewer losses at all. That depends on the weaponry. If you are in a highly defensible position like a castle, buit the other side got cannons to bombard you, while you have not, you just get bombarded to pieces.
