  1. Extra armor is extra armor. The actual tank armor below these thin metal plates still exists and the thin metal plates are enough to force the ammunition to explode beforehand - what massively reduces the impact on the actual tank armor. Anti tank weapons got no 100% success rate, it's more around 20%. And such layers lowesr it a lot, because every little something can be enough that the warhead or alike is not able to penetrate the tank.
