It's mainly a brutal lack of servers. WoW got twenty times as many EU servers and 10 times as many US servers as FF14.
The lack of Square's will to invest even a little money into FF14 is pretty disgusting the one of the big reasons it's failing. Yes, they lured in some newbies with PR lies. The numbers you see there are the product of this, they come from the time before FF14 lost around 2/3+ of the active players and many won't come back again, especailly the new ones, since EW was the first time they saw what the actual current gameplay of FF14 looks like. When Square started their streamer PR, it was the end of the expansion and the streamers sold the whole content since 2013 as "that's how the game is in general".
All of us players who were with FF14 since this year knew, that they were lying, but of course no one cares about that, people love to fall for lies. That's why PR works, no matter how dumb and obvious and how often people had to learn they were lied to, they will fall for it again.

@scotaloo77g73 I don't care what you call it. Normal content = whatever the majority is doing, in contrats to for example raids, which are mainly done by a smaller or bigger minority.
FF14 is overall easy - even Savage and Ultimate. The 'hard' part is, that it's a super scripted fights full of one shot mechanics (in case of Ultimate) and you need the will to repeat it over and over and over again from the start to first learn where the script demands you to stand and then everyone following this. It's more a question of wanting to do something like that - and finding seven other people who are also willing to do it.
If you use addons in FF14, that takes 80%+ of the difficulty out of the fight. The game simlpy does not tell you at all, what the boss is gonna do, so you live.die.repeat your way throught it. The biggest part of the challenge is a guessing game.
Ex trial weapons only play a very small role when the expansion is fresh, because you got ex trials sooner than the raid, it later loses als meaning. When you take the current content for example, it simply drops 580 ilvl equip, while 600 is the raid and tomestone gear (you need to uprade tomestone gear from 590 to 600 of course - you can't upgrade the ex trial weapons at all, though). Ilvl 580 - you can CRAFT that and you get that itemlevel from faceroll normal raid. It's pretty much LFG quality, if someone has ilvl 580, that means he or she does not care at all.
