  1. Retreating only makes sense when you got a follow up plan. Else you should give up. Russia for example retreated from certain regiosn because those were without of importance and they instead strengthened the frontline by shortening and of course fortifying it. Only sacrifice they made was when trying to hold Kherson city, accepting the massive disadvantage with a river in their back to keep the city from harm. The terror attack on the dam ruined that, but in military tems it massively improved the situation of the Russian army not turning the river into an advantage.
